Hornets Coach Apologizes After Shocking LaMelo Ball Collision

Charlotte Hornets coach Charles Lee openly admitted fault after a surprising collision with star point guard LaMelo Ball during their 102-95 victory against the New Orleans Pelicans. The incident occurred in the first quarter near the Hornets bench, briefly forcing Ball to leave the game for medical attention.

Details of the Unexpected Collision

The unusual collision happened when Ball was trying to retrieve a stray pass from teammate Miles Bridges near the Charlotte sideline. Meanwhile, Lee was pacing and lowered his head to pick up the ball, unaware Ball was running toward him at the same time. The two struck heads, causing both to hold their heads in pain, with Ball falling to the floor for several minutes.

Ball left for the locker room after trainers treated a one-inch cut above his eye, which was glued shut. He returned shortly thereafter to play a major role in the win, scoring 26 points and grabbing eight rebounds, helping Charlotte secure its seventh consecutive victory.

Coach Takes Responsibility for the Collision

After the game, Lee expressed regret for the mishap while addressing reporters. He explained,

“I took a play off and you’re not supposed to take any plays off,”

he said, accepting full blame.

“I thought the ball was going out of bounds and I was going to save it from going into the stands and he was going to save the ball. We went head to head. Credit to him he didn’t yell at me too bad.”

LaMelo Ball’s Reaction and Comeback

Ball approached the incident with humor when speaking to The Associated Press after the game.

“He went for the ball and I went for the ball and obviously we bumped heads,”

Ball said.

“It was unfortunate, but hey, I’m still alive and breathing, so who cares? We got the win, so that’s what most important.”

Lee noted his admiration for Ball’s determination to return quickly despite the injury.

“I love his spirit of, ‘hey let me get to the back, get cleaned up and get back out there,'”

Lee stated.

“It just shows the growth that he continues to have to take a bump or a bruise like that and shake it off. He really helped our team.”

Ball’s Performance and Impact on the Game

Despite the collision, Ball delivered one of his strongest performances this season. He scored 18 points in the first half, stabilizing the team after Charlotte fell behind by 22 points. In the second half, Ball contributed several crucial baskets, including an uncommon two-handed dunk after driving past a defender through traffic. He also added five assists and maintained solid ball control, recording only two turnovers.

Lee praised Ball’s response to the situation, saying,

“It was a great job by him of responding to a foolish coach,”

underlining the player’s resilience and leadership.

Significance of the Event and Team Outlook

The collision underscored the intensity and unpredictability of in-game moments, highlighting Ball’s toughness and Lee’s accountability. Charlotte’s ability to maintain momentum for a seventh straight win emphasizes the team’s growing cohesion and determination. Moving forward, this incident may serve as a reminder for better sideline awareness but also reinforces Ball’s role as the team’s resilient leader in critical moments.
