The Golden State Warriors disappointed many fans recently by making only a minor trade before the deadline, acquiring Atlanta Hawks forward Kristaps Porzingis, who has been hampered by injuries. Among hopes to strengthen their roster with a versatile 3-and-D wing, rumors had circulated about the Warriors pursuing New Orleans Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III, who fits that profile. New details have now emerged about the exact offer Golden State made for Murphy as part of their attempt to upgrade their lineup.
Details of the Warriors’ Proposed Trade Package
According to Brett Siegel from ClutchPoints, the Warriors’ offer included key pieces that the Pelicans were interested in, but ultimately found insufficient. The package reportedly featured Jonathan Kuminga, a young talent with promise, alongside an unprotected 2026 first-round draft pick and a lightly protected pick in 2028. This combination represented Golden State’s serious attempt to acquire Murphy and add to their wing depth.
However, Jonathan Kuminga was instead traded to the Atlanta Hawks, bundled with Buddy Hield, to finalize the Porzingis deal. Porzingis is currently focused on recovering from an Achilles injury sustained earlier in the season.
Why the Pelicans Declined the Offer
Sources cited by Siegel indicated that the Pelicans valued Trey Murphy III highly, requiring at least three unprotected draft picks in exchange to part with him. The Pelicans deemed the Warriors’ assets “undesirable,” leading them to reject the offer. New Orleans has chosen to maintain their current roster strategy despite underperforming this season and lacking their own first-round pick due to a previous swap deal with the Milwaukee Bucks, which was traded to Atlanta.
Warriors’ Injury Concerns and Future Moves
Golden State is currently facing a series of injuries impacting their star power, including Stephen Curry, who is sidelined with a knee injury until at least the All-Star break. The team hopes Porzingis can contribute more consistently in the second half of the season than he did with the Hawks. With key players sidelined, the urgency to bolster the roster remains high.
Looking ahead, it is uncertain how aggressively the Warriors will pursue talent acquisitions during the offseason to build around Curry as he approaches the final phase of his Hall of Fame career.
