Tom Hegre, the well-known high school basketball coach, has announced his retirement after 30 years of coaching varsity basketball, including two decades at Pete Knight High School in Palmdale. Hegre’s departure marks the end of an era for the Paul George high school coach, who achieved over 500 career wins and left a lasting legacy on the program.
A Celebrated Coaching Career in Palmdale’s High Desert
Hegre’s tenure at Pete Knight High was defined by consistent success and community support. Reflecting on his time there, Hegre expressed deep gratitude for the backing he received from both parents and the local community. His overall coaching record stands at an impressive 515-274. His final season ended with a CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoff loss to Aquinas, closing a chapter filled with memorable moments.
One of Hegre’s most notable accomplishments was coaching future NBA star Paul George. As a senior, George led the Hawks to the Division 2AA final in 2008, where they narrowly lost to Rancho Verde at the Honda Center in Anaheim. That same season, George averaged 23.2 points per game and earned All-CIF honors before continuing his basketball career at Fresno State and eventually becoming a nine-time NBA All-Star.

Strong Legacy Built on Championships and Consistency
During his coaching career at Pete Knight, Hegre led the Hawks to three CIF finals appearances in 2008, 2018, and 2025. His crowning achievement came last season when the team won the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA championship with a decisive 64-43 victory over Sage Hill at Edison High. The Hawks also secured their sixth consecutive Golden League title this season while maintaining a remarkable 50-game winning streak in league play—an impressive challenge awaiting his successor.
Looking Ahead: Uncertain Future Beyond Coaching
After decades on the sidelines, Hegre plans to return to his roots in Minnesota this spring. While he may be stepping away from Pete Knight, he has not ruled out the possibility of coaching again in the future.
