Anthony Edwards Shuns NBA Face of the League Spotlight

As NBA legends like LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant approach the end of their careers, the question of who will become the next face of the league has intensified. Anthony Edwards, a four-time All-Star and rising star, is frequently mentioned in these conversations. However, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ leading scorer shows little desire to embrace this unofficial role, remarking during All-Star Weekend,

“Man, them folks got Wembanyama. They got Wembanyama. They’ll be alright.”

Preferring to Let Wembanyama Take Center Stage

During the All-Star media events, Edwards was asked if he sees himself as the future face of the NBA, to which he replied,

“No, not really… that’s what they got Wemby for.”

In a later interview with NBA TV, he further clarified his stance:

“I’m capable of being that guy, but I don’t want to be that guy. Put it like that. I want to be the guy to just show up and hoop and just kill dudes and go home.”

Edwards’ response underlines his disinterest in the fame and responsibility typically associated with being the league’s emblematic figure. He prefers focusing on his performance on the court without the pressures that come with the “face of the league” title.

The Ambiguity Surrounding the ‘Face of the League’ Label

The idea of the ‘face of the NBA’ is largely subjective and lacks any formal recognition or incentives. Unlike an official title, there is no contractual bonus, nor does the NBA logo update to reflect a current star. The designation doesn’t guarantee covers on major video games like NBA2K either. Rather, it tends to be a matter of media hype and public perception, which often results in bragging rights more than anything else.

Despite this, Edwards has steadily increased his profile among NBA audiences, appearing in commercials such as the Sprite ad featuring “Anta Claus” and an Adidas campaign where he is heard shouting with enthusiasm. These appearances contribute to his growing popularity, even among viewers who typically consume only sports content.

Edwards’ Role as the Timberwolves’ Leading Figure

While Anthony Edwards may resist the idea of becoming the NBA’s face, he has unquestionably become the definitive star for the Minnesota Timberwolves since being selected first overall in the 2020 draft. His on-court skills and rising national recognition position him as a cornerstone of his franchise’s future, regardless of broader league-wide labels.

As veterans step back, Edwards’ focus remains on excelling in games without presuming the mantle of the league’s representative face, leaving that spotlight open for emerging talents like Victor Wembanyama.
