The Golden State Warriors missed out on acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo at the recent trade deadline, with the Milwaukee Bucks star reiterating his commitment to remain in Milwaukee during an interview at All-Star Weekend. Despite this, strategic discussions suggest the Warriors still have a viable path to bring Antetokounmpo to Golden State this offseason.
Warriors’ Pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo Remains Open
Although the Warriors were unable to secure Giannis Antetokounmpo before the trade deadline, new optimism emerged at the start of the week. Yossi Gozlan from Third Apron detailed how Golden State might still maneuver to add the Bucks’ superstar this summer, even after trading Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield to the Atlanta Hawks for Kristaps Porzingis.
The key to this plan lies in the contract situations of Draymond Green and Kristaps Porzingis. Both players could sign contract extensions that maintain their trade eligibility during the offseason. By structuring those contracts carefully, their combined salaries could fit the salary cap requirements necessary to acquire Antetokounmpo, whose max contract is $58.5 million.
“It’ll be interesting to see how they handle Porzingis and Green’s contract negotiations. Both can be extended to new deals now that could keep them trade-eligible for the offseason. For example, they could structure their first-year salaries so both can be aggregated for a max player like Antetokounmpo,”
Gozlan wrote.
Challenges and Rewards of Pursuing Giannis for the Warriors and Stephen Curry
The Warriors’ route to acquiring Giannis is complex and requires delicate management by general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr., including potentially letting go of key players such as Draymond Green. Despite these difficulties, the payoff could be substantial.
Giannis Antetokounmpo, a two-time MVP and former Defensive Player of the Year, represents a top-tier talent who would provide Stephen Curry with the elite co-star Golden State has sought since the departure of Kevin Durant. Combining Curry and Antetokounmpo would instantly elevate the team’s championship prospects.
Although Antetokounmpo maintains his loyalty to Milwaukee, and the Warriors were unsuccessful during the trade deadline, the revelation that Golden State can still present a serious offer this offseason keeps the possibility alive.
