The Los Angeles Lakers are preparing for the crucial second half of their season after the recent All-Star break. Positioned just two games above the play-in threshold in the Western Conference, the team faces pressure to improve its defensive capabilities to secure a stable playoff spot. The Lakers’ need for more versatile defenders who can contribute on both ends of the floor has become increasingly urgent as the season progresses.
Minimal Changes at Trade Deadline Leave Defensive Gaps
At the trade deadline, the Lakers made a modest move by sending Gabe Vincent to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Luke Kennard, a sharpshooter. However, this transaction did little to enhance the team’s defensive versatility, an area of concern that has persisted throughout the season. The current roster lacks players who excel both offensively and defensively, a shortfall that could hamper the team’s postseason ambitions.
Free Agency Targets Include Key 3-and-D Players
Looking ahead to free agency this summer, the Lakers are reportedly interested in several three-and-D players who fit their need for defenders capable of stretching the floor. Among the unrestricted free agents receiving attention are Andrew Wiggins and Tari Eason, players known for combining defensive length with shooting ability. Other candidates discussed internally include Tobias Harris, Quentin Grimes, and Dean Wade.
They need to get as many defenders with length that can knock down a shot as possible,
said one Eastern Conference executive, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
Unrestricted free agents who have been discussed internally, sources told ESPN, include Andrew Wiggins and Tari Eason, while Tobias Harris, Quentin Grimes and Dean Wade are other players who fit that profile,
McMenamin reported.
Monitoring Restricted Free Agent Peyton Watson
In addition to unrestricted free agents, the Lakers have also shown private interest in restricted free agent Peyton Watson, currently with the Denver Nuggets. While it is expected that Denver intends to retain Watson following his promising season, the Nuggets’ tendency to avoid salary cap complications leaves some uncertainty regarding his future.
The Lakers also privately discussed restricted free agent Peyton Watson,
McMenamin noted.
Challenges Persist as Lakers Prepare for Upcoming Matches
Last summer, the Lakers lost a valuable two-way player in Dorian Finney-Smith, who signed with the Houston Rockets. As a result, the current squad does not feature any players who maintain above-average performance on both offense and defense. This imbalance raises concerns about potential vulnerabilities in the playoffs, especially given similar issues that surfaced last year. The Lakers look to address these weaknesses while gearing up to face the Los Angeles Clippers in their next game on Friday evening.
