The Los Angeles Lakers face ongoing challenges as they try to build a roster around star players Anthony Davis and Luka Doncic. Despite securing Doncic through a high-profile trade, the Lakers have yet to assemble the supporting cast needed to push toward a championship, leaving significant gaps in their lineup.
Currently positioned fifth in the Western Conference, the Lakers struggle mainly due to defensive weaknesses that remain unaddressed, even after the trade deadline. These shortcomings put additional pressure on Doncic, Austin Reaves, and the rest of the team, limiting their ability to establish a consistent playing rhythm.
Injury Issues Hinder Lakers’ Defensive Stability
Every game has become a tough battle for the Lakers as their defensive flaws force them to outscore opponents just to stay competitive. This struggle becomes particularly apparent when facing teams with stout defensive strategies, with key players such as Doncic, Reaves, and LeBron James frequently missing time due to injuries.
We’re playing good ball at times, but the number one important thing for us is health. We finally got healthy with AR coming back and then Luka goes down with the hamstring. So that is going to be the most important for our team. And it’s kind of been like that the last few years for our team,
James said on the latest episode of the Mind the Game podcast.
Recurring Roster Gaps Limit Lakers’ Margin for Error
James pointed out that the Lakers face familiar difficulties with their roster construction. When Anthony Davis was on the team, his injuries left the team vulnerable, as there was insufficient depth to compensate. The same issue persists with Doncic’s absence, highlighting a critical lack of reliable backups.
We haven’t been setup to the point where we have a lot of room for error or, like when AD was on the team. AD goes down it was like, s**t. We don’t have enough to kind of pick that up. When Luka goes down you know it’s s**t, it’s Luka. AR was down, but it was tough on us,
James added.
These ongoing roster deficiencies emphasize the importance of maintaining player health and depth as the Lakers compete in a rigorous Western Conference. With the team’s potential hinging on the availability of Davis, Doncic, and Reaves, addressing these vulnerabilities will be crucial for any sustained championship push in the near future.
