The Golden State Warriors got some hopeful injury updates on Stephen Curry and Kristaps Porzingis before their practice on Wednesday, in preparation for Thursday’s game against the Boston Celtics at the Chase Center. The updates arrive amid a stretch of injuries impacting the team, at a crucial time as they aim for a strong postseason performance.
Stephen Curry has been sidelined since January 30 due to a runner’s knee injury, missing the past five games, which has forced coach Steve Kerr to adjust the team’s lineup significantly. Meanwhile, Kristaps Porzingis has been out since January 7 with knee tendinitis and an illness, keeping him on the long-term injured list.
Stephen Curry’s Prospects for Returning Against Celtics
Coach Steve Kerr indicated that Curry could potentially return for the upcoming game, but the decision will depend on how the star guard performs during practice on Wednesday. Curry appeared in good spirits during All-Star Weekend, hosting a studio show at Inglewood’s Intuit Dome despite not playing in the event. This season, he is averaging 27.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game.
“That’s the hope,” Kerr said regarding Curry’s status against the Celtics. “But we haven’t seen Steph yet. We’ll see how it goes tomorrow.”
Curry will be turning 38 next month, and his return is seen as a crucial boost for the Warriors’ offense as they push towards the playoffs.
Kristaps Porzingis Makes Progress but Remains Cautious
While Curry’s return seems likely, Porzingis’ situation remains tentative. Kerr noted the center’s positive progress, as he has shown flashes of readiness during recent 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 practice drills, though he is not fully game-ready yet. The coaching staff is proceeding carefully to ensure no setbacks.
“He’s feeling good, but we won’t make a determination until after we practice tomorrow afternoon,” Kerr explained. “We’ll get up and down the floor and scrimmage, which we didn’t do today. We did more skill work and went over some things, so tomorrow we’ll have a better feel for both those guys.”
Porzingis returning to practice and participating in team drills is a positive sign, but the Warriors want to make sure both players are fully fit before reintegrating them into game action.
Impact of Player Returns on Warriors’ Playoff Hopes
Currently positioned eighth in the Western Conference with a 29-26 record, the Warriors need their star players healthy to improve their standing. The potential return of Curry and Porzingis offers renewed hope for adjusting the team’s dynamic and elevating their playoff chances.
The timing of their returns could be pivotal, as the team navigates a tough stretch of the schedule with eyes fixed on a deep postseason run. Maintaining caution with rehabilitation will be critical to avoid prolonging injuries and to secure long-term contributions from both key players.
Steve Kerr said the Warriors worked on their spacing around Kristaps Porzingis post ups tonight: “It’s a little different than our spacing around Jimmy…Kristaps is more of a scorer, shooter from iso spots.” pic.twitter.com/iVP5llTQsp
