The Los Angeles Lakers are gearing up for an aggressive offseason, aiming to make significant improvements across their roster. Central to their plans are Bronny James trade rumors, with the team’s ability to maneuver depending heavily on LeBron James’ uncertain future as he enters unrestricted free agency.
LeBron James’ potential departure would create major financial flexibility for the Lakers. Industry analyst Bobby Marks from ESPN projects the Lakers will have around $51 million in cap space this summer, even after accounting for Austin Reaves’ $20.9 million free agent hold. This rare cap room puts Los Angeles in an advantageous position to target elite talent during free agency and trades.
Lakers Target Giannis Antetokounmpo as Their Leading Offseason Goal
Among the stars linked to the Lakers, Giannis Antetokounmpo stands out as the franchise’s prime pursuit. According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, the Lakers consider Antetokounmpo their “big prize,” and they
“would be one of the teams on a very short list if the Bucks star asks for a trade out of Milwaukee.”
This suggests Los Angeles is preparing for a high-stakes effort to acquire the two-time MVP should he become available.
Supporting this outlook, Sam Amick of The Athletic reported that Los Angeles is “planning an all-out pursuit” of Antetokounmpo if a trade opportunity arises. Moreover, Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus identified possible trade paths for the Lakers to clear cap space and maximize assets, stating,

“the Lakers may look to deal their first-round pick, Dalton Knecht, Bronny James (to whatever team his father joins), and possibly Jarred Vanderbilt to maximize flexibility—or even land a player like Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks via trade.”
While Austin Reaves remains a key component for the Lakers, LeBron James’ status is uncertain amid rumors of retirement and reported conflicts within the organization. If James chooses to leave, a return to the Cleveland Cavaliers is considered plausible, with McMenamin noting that Cleveland “would welcome a reunion.” CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn also described a possible sign-and-trade deal involving Jarrett Allen from the Cavaliers as part of the Lakers’ broader roster restructuring.
Trade Assets and Cap Space Bolster Lakers’ Negotiating Power
The Lakers’ capacity to pursue major roster changes improves as they will hold three tradable first-round picks by the 2026, 2031, and 2033 drafts. This significant increase in draft capital provides general manager Rob Pelinka with enhanced leverage in negotiations, particularly when discussing superstar acquisitions.
In addition to draft picks, Austin Reaves could become a pivotal figure in any large trade. Eligible for a five-year, $241 million contract extension this offseason, Reaves might be included in deals as a salary-matching asset, though any such trade would require his consent.
Additional players like Rui Hachimura, Maxi Kleber, Luke Kennard, and Jaxson Hayes are all set to become unrestricted free agents alongside LeBron James, adding more variables to the Lakers’ offseason plans and financial flexibility.
Opportunities to Expand Salary Cap Flexibility Further
The Lakers’ cap space could increase even beyond current projections. Player options held by Deandre Ayton ($8.1 million), Marcus Smart ($5.3 million), and a team option for Kobe Bufkin ($4.2 million) represent additional roster decisions that will influence how much cap room Los Angeles ultimately secures.
Eric Pincus suggested,
“If the Lakers let everyone go, including Austin Reaves, Bronny James, all free agents, and both Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart opt out of their final years, L.A. could reach $80 million in cap room,”
adding,
“Along with the RMLE, the franchise would have the most spending power in the league.”
Pincus also noted that Ayton’s future likely depends on his market options, while the Lakers might encourage Smart to opt out before re-signing him under the mid-level exception to maximize cap space.
Regardless of how the offseason unfolds, the Lakers appear set for critical decisions ahead. Should LeBron James depart, Los Angeles will have the resources and assets to aggressively reshape the team. If he remains, the franchise can continue competing while maintaining flexibility to make a major move soon.
