Will Richard’s 21 Leads Shorthanded Warriors to Big Win

Will Richard scored 21 points as the Golden State Warriors defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 133-112 on Wednesday night in Memphis. Despite missing several key players, the Warriors managed a commanding victory with strong performances from Gary Payton II and Brandin Podziemski, who each contributed 19 points.

Strong Three-Point Shooting Fuels Golden State

All nine Warriors who saw action made at least one three-pointer, helping Golden State finish 19-of-46 from beyond the arc. Gui Santos added 17 points and Moses Moody chipped in with 14. The Warriors built a significant lead in the second quarter, going on a 13-0 run to take a 63-39 advantage, and led 74-53 at halftime.

Memphis Struggles Without Key Players and Size

The Grizzlies, playing short-handed and undersized, have now lost seven of their last eight games. Memphis was led by GG Jackson with 24 points and eight rebounds, while Ty Jerome scored 22 points and provided five assists, including four made three-pointers. Javon Small added 16 points and Taylor Hendricks scored 14. Memphis was outrebounded 48-34 and has been dominated on the boards in their last three losses.

Impact of Injuries on Both Teams

Memphis was without star guard Ja Morant for the 15th consecutive game due to an elbow injury. Additionally, three starters—rookie Cedric Coward, Santi Aldama, and Zach Edey—were sidelined with injuries. The Warriors also missed key contributors, including Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Kristaps Porzingis, and Jimmy Butler. Curry has not played since January 30 because of a right knee injury, making this his ninth straight missed game.

Warriors Maintain Control Despite Grizzlies’ Efforts

Although Memphis started the third quarter with a 7-0 run to trim the deficit to 82-70, Golden State quickly responded with a 12-2 run powered by Gui Santos, restoring a 22-point lead late in the third. The Warriors extended their dominance in the fourth quarter, with Richard’s basket capping a 10-1 run that increased their lead to as much as 32 points.

Significance of the Victory Amidst Player Absences

This win demonstrates the Warriors’ resilience despite being shorthanded and missing several star players. Their ability to rely on depth and three-point shooting allowed them to control the game against a depleted Grizzlies squad. For Memphis, the continued absence of Ja Morant and other key players has left the team struggling to compete, especially in rebounding. The Warriors will look to build on this momentum in upcoming games, while the Grizzlies face pressing challenges to regain their form.
