Josh Giddey Shines with Triple-Double in Bulls’ Big Win

Josh Giddey played over 32 minutes on Sunday, marking one of his top performances this season by recording a triple-double with 20 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 assists. This achievement was Giddey’s eighth triple-double of the season and the 15th in the history of the Bulls franchise, tying him with Scottie Pippen for the second-most triple-doubles ever for the team. The 32:15 minutes Giddey logged also represented his longest playing time since late December in a game against the 76ers.

Prior to this game, Giddey faced a strict limit of 25 minutes per game in the previous five contests, which affected his ability to find his rhythm on the court. Despite that, he remained focused without making excuses, acknowledging the importance of consistent playing time. He expressed hope that the recent restrictions on his minutes would no longer be necessary.

“It’s just about getting rhythm, it’s about getting into the flow of things,”

Giddey said about his playing time challenges.

“Playing those kind of normal minutes does help a player just get back to normal rhythm, but I can’t make excuses.”

Giddey has missed 21 games this season, mostly because of left hamstring injuries, which have slowed his progress.

Alongside Giddey, Tre Jones also saw extended minutes, logging 27:32. Having missed 18 games due to ankle and hamstring problems, Jones had recently increased his court time, averaging nearly 24 minutes in the last five games.

“I’m happy for those guys because I know they get frustrated,”

Bulls coach Billy Donovan said.

“They also understand, but they’re competitive and want to play more when they can.”

Turnover Issues and Ball Control Adjustments

Before Sunday’s contest, the Bulls ranked 21st in the league in turnovers, averaging 14.3 per game, with a concerning upward trend to 21.2 turnovers over their last five games. Coach Donovan distinguished between turnovers caused by execution errors and those resulting from poor spacing or bad decision-making, showing less tolerance for the latter.

“We put those things on [tape] and try to help them get them to see it,”

Donovan explained.

“It’s easy for me in the position I’m in to show them film in slow motion of options, but they’re having to make split-second decisions.”

On Sunday, the Bulls slightly improved their ball control, committing 18 turnovers but offsetting them with 35 assists. Giddey led with 10 assists, while Jones contributed six and Guerschon Yabusele added five assists for the team.

Special Guests Attending the Game

Scottie Pippen, seldom seen at the United Center, was in attendance, sitting alongside Bulls president Michael Reinsdorf and former teammate Toni Kukoc. Their presence highlighted the significance of the game for the Bulls organization.

In addition, Bears head coach Ben Johnson attended the game and was introduced to the crowd during the second quarter, receiving a warm ovation. Johnson, who met with Donovan before the game, playfully mimicked a postgame locker room celebration gesture from a recent Bears victory.

Comments from Bucks Coach Doc Rivers

Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers began his pregame remarks by reflecting on the “Hammond Bulls,” a phrase referencing the Bears’ potential complex path to a new stadium in Northwest Indiana. Rivers, a Chicago native and former high school basketball star at Proviso East in Maywood, acknowledged the connection between the local sports communities, adding an interesting angle to the Bulls’ matchup.

Implications of Giddey’s Performance for the Bulls

Josh Giddey’s triple-double underscores his growing importance in the Bulls’ lineup as he overcomes injury setbacks and adjusts to more consistent minutes. His ability to deliver across scoring, rebounding, and playmaking makes him a versatile asset for Chicago’s ambitions this season. With returning players like Tre Jones regaining form and the team addressing ball control issues, the Bulls seem poised to improve their offensive flow and reduce costly mistakes.

Attendance from franchise legends and notable local figures highlights the significance of this period for the Bulls as they aim to build momentum. The hope is that Giddey’s increased playing time will continue without restrictions, allowing him to maintain his rhythm and impact on the court.
