Zach Edey to Have Second Ankle Surgery, Season Return Uncertain

The Memphis Grizzlies announced on Sunday that Zach Edey will undergo a second surgery to address persistent pain and talar bone stress in his left ankle. The procedure follows an earlier operation in June aimed at stabilizing the lateral ankle joint and treating ligament laxity. While Edey’s lateral ligaments remain stable, the medial (deltoid) ligaments are now causing ongoing discomfort and stress, necessitating this follow-up surgery designed to further encourage bone healing.

Recovery Outlook and Impact on Season

Edey is expected to fully recover from the surgery, but the timeline for his return to action remains unclear. The Grizzlies have indicated that they will provide a more precise schedule after the operation is completed. Since Edey has not played since December 7 due to this ankle injury, and with just over a month left in the 2025–26 regular season, it appears unlikely he will be able to contribute before the season ends.

Team Standing and Future Expectations

Currently, Memphis sits 11th in the Western Conference with a 22–36 record, putting them outside playoff contention if the season were to conclude today. Edey, the 2024 first-round draft pick, appeared in only 11 games this season, averaging 13.6 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. The team hopes he will be healthy and ready to return when the 2026–27 season begins.
