The Indiana Pacers, despite holding one of the league’s poorest records, expect to have center Ivica Zubac back in action before this season ends. The team is optimistic about his recovery from a left ankle sprain that has kept him out since early February.
Recovery Progress and Team’s Cautious Approach
After joining the Pacers from the Los Angeles Clippers at the trade deadline, Zubac has begun light training during the All-Star break and is steadily increasing his practice intensity. Head coach Rick Carlisle shared with reporters that while Zubac is improving, the exact timing of his return remains uncertain.
“I don’t know when. He’s doing better, but he’s not there yet and we’re not going to send a guy out there to play who isn’t 100 percent,”
Carlisle said during a media session.
Pacers’ Strategy and Zubac’s Expected Role
Before finalizing the trade for Zubac, Indiana considered various options at the center position. Ultimately, the Pacers acquired the veteran big man to strengthen their frontline, expecting him to take on a starting role going forward. Zubac’s defensive skills were recognized last season with his selection to the All-Defensive Second Team, and prior to the injury, he posted solid statistics, averaging 14.4 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 2.2 assists over 43 games with Los Angeles.
Implications for the Pacers’ Late-Season Outlook
Zubac’s return holds significance for the struggling Pacers as they aim to improve their performance and build momentum heading into next season. While his comeback timeline is still being gauged carefully, having a player with his experience and production could provide the team with a much-needed boost on both ends of the floor as the season draws to a close.
