PHOENIX — Khaman Maluach is gaining momentum with the Phoenix Suns during Mark Williams’ expected two-to-three week absence due to a foot injury. As the team’s starting center recovers, Maluach and backup Oso Ighodaro are receiving increased playing time, presenting new opportunities for the rookie.
While Ighodaro has been the consistent secondary center behind Williams, Maluach has seen limited minutes so far, mainly appearing at the end of games with large score gaps. However, recent performances suggest the Duke product is ready to contribute more significantly to the Suns’ efforts.
Early Impressions from Maluach’s Rising Role
In the Suns’ recent victory over the New Orleans Pelicans, Maluach made a standout defensive impact, recording five blocks alongside four points, four rebounds, and an assist. This showing signals the value he can add as the team adapts to key absences in the lineup.
“I think the biggest thing is just that he knows he’s getting consistent minutes. Hopefully, the first game jitters of being in there were out after last night. Doesn’t change, we wouldn’t put you in there if we didn’t believe in you,”
said Suns head coach Jordan Ott, highlighting Maluach’s growing confidence on the court.
Ott also complimented Maluach’s presence near the basket, noting the challenges the Suns’ defense often faces against teams skilled at driving inside.
“And we’re going to continue to help him. Thought his presence at the rim, especially a team like this, like we talked about, it gets there so often, even when some of the foul calls were close. So that’s great, it’s a great starting point. Clean those up and then next game, he will be even better, and that’s what we’re looking for.”
From Developmental Prospect to Key Contributor
Maluach entered the season primarily viewed as a project, with the Suns initially cautious about rushing him onto the floor, especially with Williams, Ighodaro, and Nick Richards ahead on the depth chart. Yet, the current situation has accelerated his chance to showcase talent in games that matter for the Western Conference standings.

“He makes a huge impact on the defensive end,”
said Suns guard Collin Gillespie.
“I think once he is in those situations more, we kind of throw him in the fire right now and let him learn that way. Once he gets to the speed of the game, he’ll get even better. He was awesome tonight in terms of energy. Playing through mistakes obviously, he’s a young guy, but you can control your effort and your attitude and he does that every day.”
Building Confidence Through Playing Time and Support
Maluach recently completed his first stretch of games playing over ten minutes each, a critical period for observing his adaptation and the defensive adjustments opponents may make. His resilience and drive were evident postgame.
“I’ve always been confident, it’s just the reps needed and the experience and I’ve been really getting it from my coaches and my teammates coaching me on the bench and coaching me through moments like today,”
Maluach said after the New Orleans victory.
“It’s great support, and it really hypes me up to see that my teammates got my back. Whatever I do they’re gonna help me through everything.”
Implications for Suns’ Season and Future Prospects
Khaman Maluach’s rapid progress offers the Phoenix Suns added depth at center during a crucial phase of the season. His ability to protect the rim and energize the team defensively could play a pivotal role as Phoenix strives to climb the Western Conference ranks. Continued growth and increased minutes will show how significant his impact can be moving forward.
