On Super Bowl Sunday, Dareke Young of the Seattle Seahawks will represent not just his team, but the support and sacrifices of a community that began in his hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina. His journey to this moment reflects years of dedication and belief fueled by his family and hometown.
Toinette Young, Dareke’s mother, describes the experience as almost unbelievable.
“Some days I still have to pinch myself.”
She reflects on how surreal it feels to see her son preparing to compete on football’s biggest stage.
A Nontraditional Path to the NFL
Dareke Young’s football journey did not follow the more typical route often seen in the NFL. Raised in southeast Raleigh, he attended Middle Creek High School in Apex before playing college football at Lenoir-Rhyne University, a Division II school located in Hickory, North Carolina. This level of college football rarely attracts significant national attention.
His mother recalled that Dareke didn’t often voice ambitions to become a professional football player during his early years.
“That was not something he talked about growing up,”
she said.
“Like, ‘I want to be a professional football player.’ It probably wasn’t until his junior year in college that it started to feel like it could become a reality.”
Young himself acknowledged the surreal nature of the moment.
“He told me it probably won’t feel real until he steps on the field. And it’ll probably be the same for me.”
Adapting to the NFL’s Demands
After being selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the seventh round of the NFL Draft, Dareke faced considerable challenges beyond the field. The move from college football in North Carolina to the professional level on the West Coast required rapid adaptation to a faster pace and higher level of competition.

Toinette shared the difficulty of this transition.
“It was an adjustment getting drafted by Seattle,”
she said.
“He was just two and a half hours away from home in college. Now he was across the country, adjusting to a faster pace and a whole different level of football.”
Despite these challenges, Dareke’s dedication and faith remained unwavering. His mother emphasized how these qualities propelled him.
“Faith was instilled in him at a very early age,”
she stated.
“And I think he played with a chip on his shoulder — coming from a D-2 school, being drafted in the seventh round. He had to believe in himself and push himself.”
Making Key Contributions on the Field
As a wide receiver and vital special teams player for the Seahawks, Dareke Young has proven himself in critical moments. One standout highlight came during the NFC Championship game, where he recovered a fumble that played a pivotal role in Seattle securing their Super Bowl appearance.
His mother recalled the excitement of witnessing this moment firsthand.
“My mom and I were at the game,”
she laughed.
“We went absolutely bonkers. Everybody around us did too.”
The Emotional Ride for a Football Family
Even now, the intensity of game days remains nerve-wracking for Toinette and other football families. She candidly spoke about her feelings leading up to the Super Bowl.
“I am nervous,”
she admitted.
“I think once I fly out Friday and get around the other moms, it’ll be better. We’re all full of jitters and excitement.”
This shared experience among Seahawks’ mothers has grown into a supportive network.
“We have corporate prayer every game day,”
Toinette explained.
“We have a chat we’re in constantly. It’s been extremely supportive — it helps having other people experiencing the same thing.”
Balancing Normal Life Amid Super Bowl Hype
As the family prepares for one of the biggest events in sports, maintaining balance between everyday responsibilities and the Super Bowl buildup presents its own challenge. The reality of the moment is striking, with anticipation building in Raleigh and beyond.
Back home, local watch parties are scheduled, reflecting the pride and enthusiasm felt across the community. Toinette appreciates the support.
“When I tell you Raleigh has really gotten behind my family — it’s been incredible,”
she said.
When asked about her hopes for the big game, she responded confidently.
“We’re going to be on the side of the confetti,”
she said with a smile. Seattle.
