Lou Esposito, who served as the defensive line coach for the Michigan football team, is departing the Wolverines to take on the same position with the Baltimore Ravens. The move was first reported Thursday evening by Ravens beat writer Jeff Zrebeic. This change connects Esposito with the Ravens’ coaching staff during the 2024 NFL season, marking a significant step in his career.
Esposito’s Coaching Impact and Player Development at Michigan
Esposito joined Michigan in 2024 and played a key role in developing defensive linemen such as Mason Graham and Kennth Grant, both selected in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Even after their exit, Esposito led a consistently strong defensive line that contributed to Michigan’s total of 28 sacks in the most recent season. His expertise in both player development and defensive strategy was evident throughout his tenure.
Long-Term Value and Recruiting Reputation
Under the leadership of head coach Kyle Whittingham, Esposito was one of the few coaches retained, thanks in part to his status as one of the top recruiters in the Big Ten and nationwide. His ability to attract and keep talented players was a crucial asset to Michigan’s coaching staff. Despite this, his time with Whittingham’s team was relatively brief given the recent coaching changes.
New Partnership with Ravens Head Coach Jesse Minter
Esposito will now work under Baltimore’s new head coach, Jesse Minter, who recently joined the Ravens after serving as Michigan’s defensive coordinator. Although the two did not overlap during their time in Ann Arbor, the Baltimore staff will bring them together for the first time to coach the defensive line at the NFL level. Meanwhile, Michigan has begun searching for a replacement to continue the strong performance of its defensive line.
“Esposito’s move to the Ravens highlights the growing connections between college programs and the NFL, especially when coaching staffs evolve,”
said Jeff Zrebeic, Ravens beat writer.
The Ravens are close to a deal to hire University of Michigan DL Coach Lou Esposito, per sources. He’ll coach the Ravens DL.
