During the 2025 NFL Honors awards ceremony, Washington Commanders linebacker Bobby Wagner received the prestigious Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award, recognizing players who demonstrate exceptional performance both on the field and through community service. This award celebrates Wagner’s impact beyond football, underscoring his dedication to helping others.
In his acceptance speech, Wagner paid heartfelt tribute to his late mother, Phenia Mae, who passed away from a stroke when he was young. She was only 47 years old, but her unwavering faith in Wagner’s potential shaped his journey. He credited her belief in him during times when he struggled to believe in himself.
I cannot be up here and not talk about my mom. She is and will ever be my rock, she’s the reason why I’m standing up here,
Wagner said.
She’s the person that had confidence in me when I didn’t even have confidence in myself.
Wagner also shared how his mother’s encouragement led him to football, with a phrase she often told him — “I got you” — becoming a guiding mantra in his efforts to support others.
And she said, ‘I got you,’
he explained.
Those words always ring in my ear. Every time I try to help somebody, every time I see somebody in need, I say, ‘I got you.’

Support and Respect from Fellow NFL Players
After delivering his speech, Wagner received warm admiration from Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who is known for crediting his own mother for support. Kelce approached Wagner backstage to express his congratulations and respect.
I’m so happy for you brother,
Kelce said.
Wagner also highlighted his appreciation for his father, Bobby Sr., reflecting on the challenges of parenthood after becoming a father himself.
I didn’t realize how hard it was to be a father until I got two kids of my own,
Wagner shared.
The Uncertainty Before the Award Announcement
Before attending the event, Wagner was uncertain about his chances of winning the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award. He admitted to almost skipping the ceremony altogether, revealing his surprise and gratitude upon receiving the honor.
I really didn’t think I was going to win this award. I almost didn’t even come to be honest. I’m glad I did.
Off the field, Wagner has been active in promoting stroke awareness and empowering youth through his Phenia Mae Fund and related projects, continuing the legacy of his mother’s influence.
The Impact of Wagner’s Recognition on the NFL Community
Bobby Wagner’s receipt of the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award underscores the importance of leadership and service beyond athletic achievement.
