Anas Sarwar Vows to Bring NFL Game to Scotland if Elected

Anas Sarwar has pledged to bring an NFL game to Scotland if he becomes First Minister following the upcoming Holyrood election in May. Highlighting the global appeal of American football, Sarwar emphasized Scotland’s readiness to host such an event to boost economic growth and international exposure.

Background on NFL’s International Expansion

The NFL has previously organized games outside the United States, including locations in London and Germany. Dublin is set to host one later this year, with the Irish government projecting the event could generate around €64 million in economic activity. This international strategy reflects the league’s efforts to engage global audiences and create new markets.

Sarwar’s Vision for Scotland as a Sports Destination

Sarwar referenced Scotland’s past involvement in American football through the Scottish Claymores, who played at stadiums like Murrayfield in Edinburgh and Hampden in Glasgow. Both venues are suitable for hosting an NFL game, making Scotland a prime candidate as the league expands internationally.

He said,

“Millions of people around the globe will be tuning into the Super Bowl tonight to see the Seahawks take on the Patriots.”

He added,

“In Scotland, we have a history with this sport with the Scottish Claymores – and as the NFL looks to expand internationally, I want Scotland at the front of the queue to host a game, with all the associated economic benefits that brings.”

Mr Sarwar also underscored Scotland’s reputation for hosting major live events, mentioning global examples including Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, the Commonwealth Games, and the upcoming Euros in 2028.

“Scotland is a world-class destination for live events – the NFL should be next on that list, alongside the investment and trade it will bring to Scotland.”

As First Minister, I’ll work to bring an NFL game to Scotland and make sure Scotland is seen as a world-class destination for investment and events.

Current Political Context Ahead of May’s Election

Despite Sarwar’s ambition, recent opinion polls suggest Scottish Labour faces challenges in the election. A recent More in Common survey predicts the Scottish National Party (SNP) will maintain its position as the largest party with 59 seats, while Scottish Labour and Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party are both expected to secure around 19 seats each.

The Potential Impact of Hosting an NFL Game

Bringing an NFL game to Scotland could strengthen the country’s profile as a destination for international sports and entertainment, attracting visitors and investment. Hosting such a high-profile event would align with broader efforts to enhance Scotland’s economic and cultural visibility on the global stage.

If elected, Sarwar’s commitment to securing an NFL game would be a marquee project demonstrating ambition for the country’s future, combining sporting heritage with economic opportunity.
