The Miami Dolphins entered the 2025 season optimistic under head coach Mike McDaniel and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, but the campaign quickly deteriorated. After a disappointing 2-6 start, Miami missed the playoffs and ultimately dismissed McDaniel at the end of the year. Compounding the struggles was a severe injury to star wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who suffered a knee dislocation during a game against the New York Jets, forcing him out for the remainder of the season. Now, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Hill’s readiness for the 2026 season remains in doubt as he continues his recovery.
Details on Hill’s Injury and Its Impact on His Career
Hill’s knee injury occurred following an awkward fall in a matchup with the Jets, bringing his 2025 season to an abrupt halt after just four games played. In those appearances, Hill caught 21 passes for 265 yards and one touchdown. This serious injury, combined with his age of 32, raises significant concerns about his ability to return to peak form. Pelissero noted,
“It is unclear at this point when or even if Tyreek will be ready to play in 2026,”
adding,
“The health, plus his age of 32, the money would all point toward Tyreek, at least for now, being out in Miami.”
Hill’s Performance History and What Lies Ahead
Before his recent struggles, Hill was among the NFL’s most explosive and consistent wide receivers. From 2017 to 2023, spanning time with both the Kansas City Chiefs and the Dolphins, he achieved six seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards and reached double digits in receiving touchdowns three times. However, even during the 2024 season, Hill did not surpass 1,000 yards—a possible sign of decline before the injury. Looking to 2026 and beyond, Hill is likely to return as a less dominant player but one still capable of contributing significantly within an offense.
Miami Dolphins’ Team Changes and Hill’s Potential Move
With Jeff Hafley taking over as head coach, the Dolphins are expected to make substantial roster changes, including moving on from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Given Hill’s uncertain health and projected decline, it seems probable the team will allow him to depart to focus on rebuilding. Should Hill regain sufficient fitness, he could attract attention from contending teams via free agency or trade, as he would still bring valuable explosiveness to the wide receiver position.
