Penei Sewell Gives Taylor Decker Space to Contemplate Retirement

Detroit Lions left tackle Taylor Decker is considering whether to continue playing beyond the 2026 season after coping with a shoulder injury throughout 2025. His decision is influenced by the toll that ongoing health issues may take on both his career and his family, prompting him to take time for careful reflection. Penei Sewell, his teammate and fellow offensive lineman, is giving Decker the room he needs to make this important choice.

Sewell Respects Decker’s Need for Reflection Without Pressure

Decker’s potential retirement would leave a significant gap on the Lions’ offensive line, one that the team would need to address carefully. Speaking recently to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, Sewell emphasized he is not attempting to influence Decker’s decision.

“I give Big Dog his space,”

Sewell said, via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

“He’s been in it for quite some time now, so he deserves it and whatever he decides it’s the best thing for him.”

Possible Lineup Changes Loom If Decker Steps Away

Decker has been a mainstay with the Lions for the past decade, making his possible exit a major change for the team’s structure. One option for the Lions could be relocating Sewell from his current position at right tackle to fill Decker’s left tackle role, though the team has yet to finalize any plans. The situation remains a point of uncertainty heading into the offseason.
