CeeDee Lamb Reveals How Schottenheimer Won Over Cowboys Team

Just over a year ago, the Dallas Cowboys made a bold move by parting ways with head coach Mike McCarthy after five seasons and a 49-35 record. Despite his overall success, McCarthy’s teams repeatedly fell short in the playoffs, and a disappointing 7-10 season in 2024 led to his dismissal. In his place, the Cowboys promoted offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, a choice met with skepticism because he had never served as a head coach before, despite 15 years of experience as an OC.

Even star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who had worked closely with Schottenheimer, initially had reservations about the coaching change.

CeeDee Lamb Describes Schottenheimer’s Impact From Day One

Schottenheimer quickly began connecting with players individually, demonstrating an assertive approach that started to alleviate doubts. According to Lamb, the first team meeting was crucial in establishing Schottenheimer’s authority and earning the players’ trust.

He won us over in the first team meeting,

Lamb shared on The Rich Eisen Show.

When the news had broke, he reached out to everyone on the team, obviously the leaders. I was in Miami when the news had broken. He had called me. We had a brief conversation as to what we expect out of our offense and out of our team. Obviously, we fell short of our goal.

Although the Cowboys finished the season at 7-9-1, the offense showed promise, even as the defense struggled significantly and failed to keep the team competitive. After Thanksgiving, Dallas held a 6-5-1 record with playoff aspirations but faltered by losing four of their final five games, effectively ending their postseason hopes.

Ongoing Coaching Staff Revisions and Leadership Confidence

Lamb expressed optimism about Schottenheimer’s leadership despite the team’s uneven results. The Cowboys have been actively revamping their coaching staff, most notably by replacing defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus with Christian Parker, a rising coach from the Eagles. While personnel changes will be necessary to improve overall performance, Schottenheimer’s management of the coaching staff has been a positive development.

It was just how assertive it was,

Lamb explained.

He won the team over immediately. I feel like the thing that a lot of people lack in this league is confidence. And I feel like, once he got into that meeting room, he took over the reins, understanding the situation and the shoes that he had to fill.

Schottenheimer has also maintained the team’s focus through difficult times, including the tragic suicide of defensive lineman Marshawn Kneeland. Lamb highlighted the coach’s ability to help the Cowboys regain a positive mindset amid adversity.

Just winning—having your guys believe that each and every week,

Lamb said.

How can you control that, how can you control the room? It’s easy to do when you’re winning, but when you’re losing, how can you help us get back on the right track?

Schottenheimer’s Role in Shaping Dallas’ Future

Brian Schottenheimer’s determination to take control from the outset and foster confidence within the team signals a shift in the Cowboys’ culture. Although the season’s results were below expectations, the groundwork he has laid with the coaching staff and players positions Dallas to address key weaknesses, especially on defense. With continued adjustments in personnel and strategy, Schottenheimer’s leadership could be a pivotal factor in returning the Cowboys to playoff contention in the coming years.
