Browns Eye $120M WR to Boost Offense for Watson, Sanders

As the Cleveland Browns prepare for the 2026 NFL season, Shedeur Sanders is emerging as the likely starting quarterback, currently leading ahead of Deshaun Watson. Regardless of the final decision at quarterback, the Browns recognize a pressing need to strengthen their offensive lineup, particularly by enhancing the offensive line and wide receiver positions to support the passing game more effectively.

Wide Receiver Struggles Highlight Need for Veteran Addition

This past season, Cleveland’s wide receiver corps underperformed significantly, with no player surpassing 700 receiving yards or ranking among the top 80 receivers according to PFSN’s NFL WR Impact Metric. Instead, much of the team’s aerial attack relied heavily on rookie tight end Harold Fannin Jr., who recorded 731 yards on 72 receptions along with six touchdowns. Fannin’s reception total exceeded that of the next best receiver, Jerry Jeudy, by a wide margin of 22 catches, underscoring the absence of a true elite receiving threat.

With two first-round selections in the 2026 draft, the Browns have the potential to draft a promising wideout. However, there is growing speculation that adding a high-profile veteran receiver might provide a more immediate boost to the offense than solely relying on a rookie development.

Veteran Free Agent Brandon Aiyuk Emerges as Potential Target

Insider reports suggest that the Browns may pursue San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk to strengthen their receiving corps. ESPN analyst Ben Solak noted that Cleveland has a history of signing receivers to cost-effective contracts in the hope of gaining significant returns, predicting Aiyuk as a prime candidate to join the Browns.

“The Browns will bring in 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, as they continue their tradition of signing receivers on low-cost contracts in the hopes of hitting it big,”

Solak wrote.

“Aiyuk’s days in San Francisco are likely over; the Browns can offer him more money and opportunity compared to any other team in the NFL.”

After an ACL injury sidelined Aiyuk for the entire previous season, his relationship with the 49ers has reportedly declined, making a trade or release more likely. The Browns appear positioned to become a logical destination for the 28-year-old receiver, who signed a four-year, $120 million contract in 2024 and possesses proven experience with 294 receptions, 4,305 yards, and 25 touchdowns over five seasons, in addition to two rushing touchdowns.

Cleveland’s Front Office Shows Continued Interest in Aiyuk

According to Browns reporter Mary Kay Cabot, the organization has actively pursued Aiyuk before and remains open to revisiting talks. Speaking on The Ken Carman Show, she said,

“We know that [the Browns] have pursued [Aiyuk] in the past,”

“And [GM] Andrew Berry has a tendency to circle back on guys that he tried to acquire before, and go wrap them up. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if they do their diligence and inquire.”

While facilitating a trade could be complex, the opportunity to sign Aiyuk as a free agent remains particularly attractive. Even a shorter-term deal could help the Browns accelerate the growth of a young, evolving offense led by Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders.

Implications for Browns’ Offensive Future

Acquiring a proven wide receiver like Brandon Aiyuk would address a critical offensive weakness for the Browns, providing a reliable target to complement the quarterback position, whether ultimately led by Sanders or Watson. This move could significantly enhance Cleveland’s passing attack, creating new opportunities for offensive playmakers and improving overall team competitiveness in the coming seasons.
