The Cincinnati Bengals are facing a critical decision regarding the future of their top pass rusher, Trey Hendrickson, as the 2026 offseason approaches. Hendrickson is poised to become a free agent, and the team must consider whether to retain him, trade him, or let him go amid speculation that he wants to leave Cincinnati.
All indications suggest a potential separation between the Bengals and Hendrickson this offseason. ESPN analyst Aaron Schatz noted that Hendrickson
“is desperate to get out of Cincinnati,”
emphasizing the player’s request for a trade for the second consecutive year, although he remained with the team last season.
Schatz added,
“He ended last season with only four sacks in seven games before sitting out due to core muscle surgery.”
Possible Strategies for Retaining or Trading Hendrickson
Hendrickson’s impending free agency has sparked discussions about various options available to the Bengals. They could apply the franchise tag, allowing them to keep him temporarily while exploring a longer-term solution, or they might pursue a sign-and-trade arrangement to gain value in return.
Schatz commented on this strategy:
“It is a possibility that the Bengals use their franchise tag on Hendrickson, who is about to hit free agency, but it seems that some sort of sign-and-trade deal is more likely.”
Meanwhile, Sporting News writer Matt Sullivan also noted the team’s choices:
“He’s set to be a free agent this offseason, and the Bengals have a few decisions to make. They could simply let him walk, which is within the realm of possibility. But, they could also try to keep him with a new contract or a franchise tag.”
Hendrickson’s recent production makes him a valuable asset; in 2023 and 2024, he led the NFL with 17.5 sacks and earned First Team All-Pro honors in 2024, alongside four consecutive Pro Bowl selections from 2021 to 2024. Losing a player of this caliber would create a significant void for Cincinnati.

Sullivan observed,
“The Bengals and Hendrickson are heading towards a split this offseason. And for the Bengals, they will want to recoup the most value possible in letting him walk.”
He further pointed out,
“If they simply don’t re-sign him, letting him hit free agency, the best they could get is a third-round compensatory draft pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. That pick wouldn’t be guaranteed, which might lead to a situation Schatz is expecting.”
Impact of Losing Hendrickson on Bengals’ Defense and Draft Prospects
Cincinnati’s defense has faced difficulties recently, even when Hendrickson was active. His departure would represent a major loss for their pass rush capabilities. To mitigate this, the Bengals could look toward the 2026 NFL Draft as an opportunity to improve their defense by targeting promising talent such as Rueben Bain Jr., Keldric Faulk, and Peter Woods.
Regarding a sign-and-trade deal, Sullivan explained,
“Executing a sign and trade with Hendrickson would give the Bengals guaranteed draft picks. They might not be able to land a third-round pick as they would if they let him walk, but there could be conditions on the trade to bump up the draft pick.”
He added,
“Such a deal might make the most sense for the Bengals and Hendrickson’s new team. Ideally, for Hendrickson, he will be able to choose his landing spot.”
Defensively, Cincinnati ranked last in rushing defense and 26th in passing defense in 2025, underscoring the team’s struggles. While the defense is expected to improve over time, losing Hendrickson without acquiring an equally effective replacement could worsen their situation.
