The Jacksonville Jaguars face increasing uncertainty about wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. following a noticeable decline in his second year. The calls for a Brian Thomas Jr trade have intensified as the team prepares for the 2026 NFL season, with analysts pointing to roster depth and his reduced impact on the field as key factors.
Steep Drop in Production Fuels Trade Discussions
Brian Thomas Jr. burst onto the scene as a rookie in 2024, recording 87 receptions for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns, quickly establishing himself as a promising talent. However, during the 2025 season, his output diminished significantly, with only 48 catches totaling 707 yards and just two touchdowns. This drop has cast doubts on his future with the Jaguars.
Analyst Highlights Team Depth as Reason to Consider Trading Thomas
Aaron Schatz, an NFL analyst, has recommended that Jacksonville seriously consider trading Thomas in the upcoming season. He notes that the team’s wide receiver group already includes established players like Travis Hunter, who is set to return, and Jakobi Meyers, who recently signed an extension.
“Jacksonville has Travis Hunter returning, and they’ve signed Jakobi Meyers to an extension,” Schatz wrote. Parker Washington also had a strong second half of the 2025 season.
Schatz emphasizes that the Jaguars could leverage Thomas’ remaining talent to acquire valuable draft capital, which would help offset the high draft picks they forfeited when moving up to select Hunter in 2025.
“There’s room here to trade Thomas, and his talent could fetch a high draft pick to help make up for the picks the Jags lost when they traded up for Hunter in 2025. It’s certainly something worth considering.”
Trade Rumors Persist Despite No Moves Yet
Brian Thomas Jr. has been included in trade rumors since the last deadline, yet Jacksonville has so far refrained from making any formal trade moves. His $14.6 million contract and the team’s current depth at receiver make this a pivotal moment for the franchise as it evaluates its roster strategy for future success.
Potential Impact of a Trade on Jaguars’ Strategy
If the Jaguars pursue a trade involving Brian Thomas Jr., it could signal a shift in their approach, focusing more on building around their young core, including Hunter and Meyers. Acquiring high draft picks could also provide flexibility for replenishing talent and addressing other team needs as the 2026 season approaches.
