49ers Set to Clash in Mexico City NFL Game 2026

The San Francisco 49ers are scheduled to return to Mexico City for an NFL game in the 2026 season, continuing their presence south of the U.S. border. This upcoming event is part of the NFL’s ongoing commitment to expand its international footprint, with Mexico City hosting one of the games in a series extending through 2028.

Details of the 2026 Mexico City Game Announcement

The NFL officially announced on Wednesday that the 49ers will be one of the two teams competing at Estadio Banorte in Mexico City. While the opposing team, kickoff time, and exact game date have not yet been released, fans can expect these details when the NFL schedule is revealed in the spring. This game is included in a multi-year agreement to hold NFL contests in Mexico City over three consecutive seasons from 2026 to 2028.

Mexico City’s Importance in NFL History

Mexico City has a long-standing connection to the NFL. The first official game held there was in 2005, featuring a matchup between the 49ers and the Arizona Cardinals at Estadio Azteca, which drew nearly 100,000 fans. Although preseason games had taken place earlier, 2005 marked the league’s initial formal event in the city. The 49ers most recently returned in 2022 to face the Cardinals again, with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo throwing four touchdown passes in a decisive 38-10 victory.

Leadership Reflections on the Mexico City Return

NFL Director General Arturo Olive expressed enthusiasm about hosting the 49ers again, emphasizing Mexico City’s vibrant energy and its crucial role in helping the sport grow internationally.

“We’re delighted to host the San Francisco 49ers once again in Mexico City for the 2026 NFL Mexico Game,”

said Arturo Olive.

“Returning to Estadio Banorte highlights our strong, ongoing commitment to Mexico. Few places generate the kind of energy we see here, and we look forward to being back in a country that plays such a meaningful role in the growth of our game.”

Similarly, 49ers CEO Al Guido shared excitement about reconnecting with fans in Mexico, referencing past experiences and anticipating a strong home-field vibe abroad.

“We are thrilled to return to Mexico and to play in front of one of the most passionate fan bases in the league,”

stated Al Guido.

“After two unforgettable experiences in 2005 and 2022 in Mexico City, we’re excited to reunite with the Mexico Faithful and look forward to the energy local fans will bring in creating a true home-field advantage for our team abroad.”

International Series Expands with Multiple Host Countries

The Mexico City game will be among nine International Series events slated for upcoming NFL seasons. Alongside Mexico, scheduled games will be held in Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom, reflecting the league’s broader strategy to engage fans worldwide.
