Cardinals’ LaFleur Keeps Kyler Murray’s Future Unclear After Bench

Following a 2025 season marred by injuries and missed games, Kyler Murray’s status with the Arizona Cardinals remains unresolved. After suffering a foot injury in Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans, the two-time Pro Bowler was sidelined for 12 games, leading to Jacoby Brissett stepping in as the starting quarterback.

When questioned about Murray’s role during a Wednesday press conference, Cardinals head coach Matt LaFleur emphasized ongoing discussions within the team but avoided specifying a timeline for Murray’s return or future involvement.

“Just like everything else on the roster, open conversations in this building,” LaFleur said. “No timeframe on that.”

Performance Overview of Kyler Murray and Jacoby Brissett This Season

Murray returned briefly to start five games but posted a 2-3 record, completing 110 of 161 passes for 962 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions. Notably, this season marked the first time in his seven-year career that he did not reach 1,000 passing yards. Despite reportedly being cleared after three games, the Cardinals ultimately placed Murray on injured reserve in early December, ruling him out for the remainder of the season.

Meanwhile, Jacoby Brissett delivered career-best figures during his 12 starts, completing 315 of 485 passes for 3,366 yards, 23 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. Brissett also contributed 168 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown, but recorded a 1-11 win-loss mark as a starter. Despite his struggles, Brissett’s increased workload and statistical output demonstrated his capability to lead the offense.

Financial and Contractual Factors Influencing Murray’s Future

Speculation is mounting that the Cardinals could move on from Murray, even though he is guaranteed $36.8 million for the 2026 season. Additionally, his 2027 base salary of $19.5 million will become guaranteed if he remains on the roster past the March 15 deadline. These financial commitments complicate the decision-making process for Arizona’s front office as they evaluate the quarterback position moving forward.

Potential Moves and Speculation on Murray’s Next Destination

Rumors continue to circulate about Murray’s next team, with some speculation linking him to the Indianapolis Colts. Bleacher Report analyst Moe Moton discussed this possibility amid uncertainties surrounding Colts quarterback Daniel Jones, who is recovering from a late-December ACL tear and is unlikely to be ready at the start of the upcoming season.

“The Indianapolis Colts can franchise-tag or re-sign Daniel Jones, though it’s not a lock they’ll do either while he recovers from a knee injury,” Moton wrote on Monday. “The 28-year-old tore his ACL late in December, which makes him uncertain to be ready for Week 1 of the upcoming season.”

“Murray would be a better option. Assuming Murray has fully recovered from a foot injury, he provides more certainty at quarterback with a slightly better resume.”

This assessment suggests that if Murray regains full health, his experience could make him an attractive option for the Colts as they seek stability at quarterback.

Implications for the Cardinals and the NFL Quarterback Landscape

The questions surrounding Kyler Murray’s role with the Arizona Cardinals reflect broader challenges in balancing player health, contract commitments, and team performance goals. LaFleur’s cautious approach and refusal to set a timeline signals ongoing evaluation and uncertainty within the organization.

For the Cardinals, decisions made in the coming months will shape their quarterback situation profoundly, potentially impacting their competitiveness in the NFL. Meanwhile, Jacoby Brissett’s improved output, despite a losing record, underscores the complexity of transitioning from an established star to a new leader under difficult circumstances.

With possible trade or release scenarios on the horizon, fans and analysts alike will closely watch how Murray’s future unfolds and whether teams like the Indianapolis Colts may emerge as contenders for his acquisition in the upcoming season.
