The Detroit Lions’ rushing attack in the 2025 season was largely ineffective, hindered by an unstable offensive line that failed to create adequate running lanes. As the season progressed, the team deployed a makeshift offensive front that left Jahmyr Gibbs without the necessary blocking support to maximize his abilities. This situation also negatively affected David Montgomery, whose diminishing production might push him to seek a trade.
The Lions clearly need better interior line play, especially a reliable guard and center next to Tate Ratledge, to open gaps for Gibbs to exploit. Although Christian Mahogany is expected to recover in time for the 2026 season, his track record taking meaningful snaps last year did not inspire confidence that he could be the solution at left guard.
Vega Ioane as a Potential Solution in the Upcoming Draft
The 2026 NFL Draft presents promising prospects at the guard position for the Lions to consider, with Vega Ioane standing out as an NFL-ready lineman who could bring consistency to Detroit’s offensive front. If the team opts to move Tate Ratledge to center, Ioane could be prepared to step in at guard and immediately contribute.
Finding a rookie who can start quickly on a contending team’s offensive line is uncommon but not unheard of, as demonstrated by Grey Zabel, who was integral to the Seattle Seahawks’ offense during the season and playoffs.
According to Lance Zierlein’s scouting report on Ioane:
“Ioane plays with excellent contact balance and technique on both base blocks and double teams. He uses his hips and hands for leverage and displacement when drive blocking. However, he lacks athleticism and foot quickness to operate effectively as a move blocker. He pass sets with good posture and a firm punch and can anchor against power.”

Considering Tackle Reinforcements and Draft Priorities
The Lions remain uncertain about Taylor Decker’s status this offseason, which might prompt them to pursue a high-caliber tackle if an opportunity arises early in the draft. However, if top tackle prospects are unavailable by the 17th overall pick, focusing on bolstering the guard position—particularly by adding competition around Mahogany—would be essential.
Detroit’s running game demands immediate and substantial improvements, making it vital for Brad Holmes and the front office to prioritize proven talent instead of experimenting with unproven players on the line. Bringing in someone like Ioane could stabilize the offensive front and provide Jahmyr Gibbs a much-needed boost in rushing effectiveness.
