Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice is confronting a $1 million civil lawsuit filed by his ex-girlfriend, Dacoda Jones, who accuses him of repeated domestic violence over more than a year. The suit was submitted to Dallas County District Court this week, with Jones alleging physical assaults and abusive behavior spanning from December 2023 to July 2025, including incidents during her pregnancy.
The complaint details serious allegations such as strangulation, throwing objects, property damage, and locking Jones out of their shared home during freezing temperatures. Earlier this year, Jones publicly shared images of her injuries, like a bloody lip and bruises, on Instagram—posts that have since been removed. While she refrained from naming Rice directly at that time, she spoke of enduring years of abuse and growing weary of defending his reputation.
Response From Rashee Rice and His Legal Team
Rice’s attorney, Sean Lindsey, referenced a sworn affidavit Jones filed in October 2025 in his response to the lawsuit, stating that Jones under oath acknowledged their dispute, but denied that Rice physically hit her. According to Lindsey, in that affidavit Jones declared, “he did not punch me.”
“We will allow the legal process to run its course and have no further comment at this time,”
Lindsey said in a statement to ESPN.
The Chiefs organization confirmed their awareness of the allegations, stating they
“remain in communication with the National Football League.”
This measured response indicates the team is monitoring the situation closely while permitting the judicial process to proceed.
Ongoing Off-Field Challenges in Rashee Rice’s Career
This lawsuit adds to a series of off-field issues affecting the 24-year-old receiver, who has encountered legal troubles during each of the last three offseasons. These incidents have overshadowed the promising start to his NFL career.
Most notably, Rice was suspended for the first six games of the 2025 NFL season due to a personal conduct policy violation. That suspension related to a March 2024 hit-and-run incident for which he pled guilty to two felony charges, resulting in 30 days of incarceration and five years of probation.
Despite these challenges, Rice’s on-field performance has been notable. In his rookie year of 2023, he recorded 79 receptions for 938 yards, earning a reputation as a dependable target for quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Following his suspension, Rice returned strong in the 2025 season, accumulating 53 catches for 571 yards and five touchdowns over eight games.
Implications for Rice’s Future and the Chiefs’ Strategy
The timing of the domestic violence lawsuit casts uncertainty over Rice’s future with the Chiefs, particularly as he enters the final year of his rookie contract. The NFL may impose additional disciplinary actions if it determines the alleged conduct violates league policies.
For Kansas City, balancing Rice’s offensive value against his recurring legal difficulties poses a significant challenge. While he is a key player when available, these ongoing issues could affect the team’s long-term plans and decisions regarding contract extensions.
As the case proceeds through the court system, the outcome will be critical not only for Rice’s career trajectory but also for the Chiefs’ offensive dynamics moving forward.
