Jayden Daniels’ Bold Injury Plan to Return Stronger in 2026

Jayden Daniels, the Washington Commanders’ quarterback and last season’s NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, is preparing for a comeback after an injury-plagued second year. His former coach has revealed a strategy Daniels is focusing on this offseason to reduce future injuries and improve his durability as he aims to return stronger by the 2026 season.

Injury Challenges and Offseason Strategy for Jayden Daniels

Daniels had a standout rookie campaign, playing all games and helping the Commanders reach the NFC Championship. However, his sophomore season was derailed by a dislocated elbow, which caused him to miss 10 games and significantly impacted his performance. His former quarterbacks coach, Ryan Porter, recently shared insights about Daniels’ approach to overcoming these setbacks during the offseason.

Porter explained that Daniels is concentrating on physical development to better protect himself on the field.

“I think Jayden’s big thing for the offseason this year is just to put on some more body armor,”

Porter said.

“I think he’s trying to, you know, just get a little bit bigger, faster, stronger, put on some more lean muscle.”

He added,

“So, I think that’s been more of his focus, like, let me get my body right. I think from a mechanical standpoint, there’s not much that he really needs to focus on that’s new. Jayden’s skill set and what he’s been doing since he’s been in high school through college, he mechanically is top three in the NFL.”

Porter’s remarks emphasize that while Daniels’ technique remains elite, his priority is building physical resilience to withstand stronger opponents and reduce injury risk.

Supporting Daniels’ Physical Growth Amid Concerns

Porter praised Daniels as possibly the best passer currently in the NFL but acknowledged the reality that competing against more physically imposing players requires additional protection. The plan to add “body armor” by increasing his lean muscle mass reflects a response to the physical demands of the league and Daniels’ recent injuries.

Despite this, Daniels’ mother, Regina Jackson, publicly challenged Porter’s depiction of his role in Jayden’s training. She posted on X,

“This is not his QB coach and hasn’t been since high school. Jayden trains with Taylor Kelly from 3DQB. Smh. Please stop giving him a platform to speak.”

Jackson’s comment highlights some tension regarding who is truly guiding Daniels’ development, adding complexity to the offseason narrative.

Impact of Injuries on Daniels’ Performance and Career Trajectory

Daniels injured his elbow midway through the 2025 season and aggravated the injury upon returning in Week 14, leading to his absence for the season’s remainder. His limited playing time contributed to a drop from fifth to 28th in PFSN’s quarterback impact rankings between his first and second seasons, underscoring how injuries affected both his availability and effectiveness.

Porter remains confident in Daniels’ talents and potential, emphasizing that maintaining health is crucial for his success.

“He can only be useful if he can stay on the field,”

Porter noted, pointing to the need for Daniels’ offseason focus on physical conditioning.

The Commanders, along with fans and analysts, are hopeful that Daniels’ commitment to strengthening his body will help him avoid prolonged absences in the future and reclaim the form that earned him Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.
