Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach confirmed that conversations with veteran tight end Travis Kelce remain active as the team waits anxiously for his retirement decision. At 36 years old, Kelce is evaluating whether to continue his career after 13 seasons in the NFL, especially following a challenging end to last year’s campaign.
The Chiefs star has considered retirement before, particularly after the team’s heavy loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2025 Super Bowl, but returned to play despite doubts. Now, after Kansas City missed the playoffs in the latest season, Kelce is once again uncertain about his future. His age, recent performance decline, and forthcoming wedding to Taylor Swift have fueled speculation that this offseason might be his last before entering free agency.
Chiefs’ Strategy as Kelce Weighs Options
Veach revealed that the Chiefs are preparing for any outcome in their talks with Kelce. Speaking at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine, he shared,
“We’ve taken a different approach with Travis, in the sense that we’ve kind of prepared for either scenario.”
He added that head coach Andy Reid and the team’s management, including assistant GM Chris Shea, have maintained open communication with Kelce’s representatives.
“Coach [Andy Reid] mentioned on Friday he’s had good dialogue with Travis. On our end, myself, [assistant general manager] Chris Shea, Travis’ crew, we’ve had some good dialogue there. I’m sure we’re gonna see [Kelce’s agent] here just like we will all the other players’ agents and we’ll continue that dialogue. But Travis is the best, he’s an icon… and hopefully he’ll come back. We’ll just kind of let that process play out,”
Veach said.
Head Coach Reid’s Perspective on Kelce’s Status
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid also commented on the ongoing situation, suggesting Kelce may choose to play another season. “There is communication,” Reid noted.

“That’s the main thing. I’ve said this before: As long as there’s communication, I’m good. That means people want to move forward. I think that’s where Travis is.”
Kelce has spent his entire NFL tenure with the Chiefs under Reid’s leadership, earning three Super Bowl titles and setting numerous records along the way. His current contract, signed as a two-year deal, expired at the end of the 2025 season.
Kelce’s Uncertainty and Personal Milestones
After completing the most recent season, Kelce expressed uncertainty about how long he would take to decide his next steps, saying,
“Who knows? Either it hits me quick or I’ve got to take some time. Last year was a little bit easier. I think I knew right away I wanted to kind of give this one [year] a shot. We’ll see.”
In addition to his NFL considerations, Kelce is preparing for a significant personal event: his marriage to pop superstar Taylor Swift this summer in Rhode Island. The couple began dating in 2023, with their relationship becoming public after Swift attended one of his Chiefs games in September that year. Kelce proposed to Swift last August, with their wedding plans moving forward amid his ongoing career deliberations.
Importance of Kelce’s Decision for Chiefs and Fans
Kelce’s choice will have a major impact on the Chiefs, who value his presence as both a player and team icon. His experience and skill have been pivotal in Kansas City’s successes, and his potential retirement introduces uncertainty as the team prepares its roster for the next season. Fans and analysts alike remain attentive to updates, recognizing that Kelce’s retirement would mark the end of an era at Arrowhead Stadium.
As negotiations and discussions continue throughout free agency, the Chiefs aim to balance respect for Kelce’s legacy with the need to strategize for future seasons. The ultimate decision may shape Kansas City’s direction in the coming years, especially as they seek to return to playoff contention after last season’s disappointment.
