During his opening remarks at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Jets general manager Darren Mougey was immediately asked about the team’s plans for running back Breece Hall. Mougey expressed strong commitment to ensuring Hall remains with the Jets for the upcoming season, signaling clear intent to keep him in green and white.
Mougey’s Strategy to Retain Breece Hall
When questioned about how the team plans to retain Hall, Mougey indicated the Jets would explore the use of either the franchise tag or the transition tag by the March 3 deadline, both of which govern one-year contracts based on top running back salaries. He emphasized that while these tags are options, the preference is to reach a long-term agreement.
Yeah, we’ll find a way to keep Breece here if we can’t get a deal done,
Mougey stated in response to a direct question about contract strategies. Regarding Hall’s willingness to stay, Mougey added,
I do, I do get the sense that Breece wants to be here,
and he reaffirmed ongoing positive discussions.
We’ve had good conversations throughout the season, after the season, so we’ll just find a way to do that.
Mougey, now in his second year as GM, conveyed that this stance has been consistent since his arrival:
Ideally, we’d find a way to get a deal done and keep Breece around. I’ve said that for the last year since I got here. Breece is a good player and we want to find a way to keep him around. We’ve been going through that process and are still doing so. We have a week to find out. If we can’t get to an agreement, which way we’ll go with that tag.

Breece Hall’s Performance Strengthens Jets’ Case
Breece Hall, selected 36th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, delivered a strong performance in his second season. He crossed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the first time with 1,065 yards at an average of 4.4 yards per carry, achieving this milestone in the season finale against Buffalo. Although his receiving numbers declined, with 36 catches for 350 yards, Hall maintained an impressive 9.7 yards per reception.
This combination of rushing and receiving helped Hall amass a career-high 1,415 scrimmage yards and led the team with 57 first downs, reinforcing his value and the importance of securing his presence for the Jets’ offensive plans.
Significance of Contract Decisions for Jets’ Future
The decision on Hall’s contract will be pivotal for the Jets as they aim to solidify their backfield and sustain offensive momentum. Mougey’s confidence and the ongoing negotiations suggest the franchise prioritizes retaining one of their key players. The upcoming week will determine whether an agreement is reached or if the team will resort to tagging Hall, which ensures his short-term presence but leaves longer-term questions open.
Maintaining Breece Hall’s role with the Jets is crucial not only for the team’s performance but also for retaining fan enthusiasm as they approach the new season following promising developments during the NFL Combine and recent campaigns.
