San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch announced that wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has effectively finished his playing career with the team. The organization plans to take action regarding Aiyuk’s contract once the new NFL league year begins on March 11, marking the official timeline for his potential release or trade. This move follows postseason infractions that led to Aiyuk’s guarantees being voided during the 2025 season, casting uncertainty over his future with the franchise.
Timing and Possible Scenarios for Aiyuk’s Departure
During a press conference at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Lynch stated,
“I think nothing will happen until the new league year starts and then when it happens, kind of semantics, but that’s when something could happen there.”
He emphasized that the team may remain open to trade offers if any other franchises show interest, leaving options on the table before finalizing Aiyuk’s exit.
In elaborating on the timing, Lynch added,
“The league year is — it’s the first time that we would do something… We’re here [at the combine], and maybe somebody comes up and has some interest. So I think we’ll keep that thing open for the time being.”
Brandon Aiyuk’s Career and Recent Challenges with the 49ers
Brandon Aiyuk secured a four-year, $120 million contract extension in August 2024 after an outstanding 2023 season where he tallied 75 receptions, 1,342 receiving yards, and seven touchdowns. At 27 years old, he showed great promise before a torn right ACL and MCL sustained in Week 7 of the 2024 season against the Kansas City Chiefs sidelined him.
Although he participated in the 49ers’ 2025 training camp during his recovery, communication between Aiyuk and the team abruptly ceased, causing confusion among Lynch, head coach Kyle Shanahan, and his teammates. He did not play in any games during the 2025 NFL season.

Lynch confirmed the situation’s finality on January 21, saying,
“I think it’s safe to say he’s played his last snap with the Niners,”
and added,
“It’s an unfortunate situation that just went awry. I will look long and hard at what could have been done differently, but sometimes it just doesn’t work out, and this was the case where that happened.”
Implications for the 49ers and Next Steps
The decision to part ways with Brandon Aiyuk, a key wide receiver previously vital to the 49ers’ offensive plans, signals a significant change for the team’s roster moving forward. Whether by release or trade, Aiyuk will not appear for San Francisco again, leaving a gap the team will need to address. The organization’s handling of this matter will unfold as the league year commences, with possible interest from other teams still being weighed. This development underscores the challenges NFL teams face in balancing player potential, health setbacks, and off-field issues within a competitive environment.
