Duke Tobin Hints at Uncertain Trey Hendrickson Bengals Status

INDIANAPOLIS — The Cincinnati Bengals face uncertainty about whether defensive end Trey Hendrickson will remain with the team beyond the 2026 season. As the NFL league year opens on March 11 at 4 p.m., Hendrickson is set to become a free agent, raising questions about his continued presence on the Bengals’ roster.

Last year, Hendrickson agreed to a restructured one-year contract worth $30 million. The Bengals have the option to place the franchise tag on him, which for defensive ends is valued at approximately $26.7 million, according to Spotrac.

Bengals’ Offseason Strategy and Hendrickson’s Status

At the NFL Combine, Bengals director of player personnel Duke Tobin addressed Hendrickson’s status amid offseason planning. Tobin emphasized the team’s openness to options concerning Hendrickson but declined to provide specific details.

I don’t throw anything on or off the table with Trey,

Tobin said.

“And we’re excited about attacking this offseason. We have resources to attack the offseason in a big way, and we want to do that.”

In terms of how we’re gonna do that, how we’re gonna allocate our resources, you know, who is it going to be on, our own free agents, what’s our intentions there? I’m not going to get into that right here. It’s just not the time to announce that to the rest of the league. So that’s the best way I can answer that.

The Bengals enter this offseason with over $53 million in salary cap space, ranking seventh most in the NFL, providing flexibility for personnel decisions.

Hendrickson’s Injury-Shortened Season and Performance

The 2025 campaign marked Hendrickson’s fifth season with Cincinnati. However, injuries limited his participation to seven games, culminating in season-ending core muscle surgery last December. Despite these setbacks, he tied for third on the team with four sacks.

When asked if the franchise tag is likely to be used on Hendrickson, Tobin refrained from closing any doors.

I’m not gonna close any doors on any player that we’ve had or any of our free agents up here today. I’m just not gonna do that,

Tobin said. “Trey’s been a great player for us. He didn’t have the year he wanted this year. We didn’t have the year we wanted this year.

Those are factors, and we’ll see where we go from there. But in terms of how we’re gonna deploy the tag if we are going to, that’s not something I’m gonna talk about here.

The deadline for applying the franchise tag is March 3 at 4 p.m., placing time pressure on the Bengals amid ongoing roster decisions.

Implications for the Bengals’ Defensive Plans

With Duke Tobin signaling openness but withholding definitive plans, the Bengals must weigh Hendrickson’s injury history and contributions in determining their free agency approach. Head coach Zac Taylor and the front office aim to rebuild a stronger defense, learning from other teams’ recent successes and failures across the AFC North.

How the Bengals choose to manage Hendrickson’s contract will significantly affect their cap space and ability to strengthen their defense this offseason, shaping the team’s direction as they prepare for the 2026 NFL season.
