Dan Skipper, once considered among the Detroit Lions’ offensive linemen with retirement speculation, quickly decided to end his playing career during the offseason. After coaching the offensive line at the East-West Shrine Bowl, he has now joined the Lions’ coaching staff as an Offensive Assistant, focusing primarily on the offensive line under the guidance of coach Hank Fraley. This move positions Skipper to play a crucial role in addressing one of the Lions’ biggest challenges from last season.
Sharp Decline in Lions’ Offensive Line Performance Last Season
While exact numbers measuring the Detroit Lions’ offensive line struggles can be elusive, Matt Okada of NFL.com, referencing NFL Pro/Next Gen Stats, highlighted a significant statistic that exposes the unit’s shortcomings. The team’s sack Expected Points Added (EPA) dropped to -81.1 in 2025, marking the worst performance since 2017. This decline has made the improvement of the offensive line the top offseason priority for the Lions.
Skipper’s Strategy to Restore Offensive Line Excellence
In a recent discussion on Twentyman in the Huddle, Tim Twentyman of Lions.com spoke with Skipper about his transition into coaching and his vision for the offensive line’s revival. Skipper emphasized that the foundation of recovery starts with the right mindset.
“I think it starts with, you know, attitude,”
Skipper said.
“You gotta have guys that want to be the best, want to play hard, want to do those things right. Obviously there’s a level of skill involved, that you gotta have. Then..the knowledge base…you can’t play fast if you’re thinking.”
“How can we make sure that these guys know exactly what they’re supposed to do, but not have to be lost in thought on the field…?”
Skipper’s insights point to the importance of both mental readiness and technical proficiency. He stressed that players must develop a deep understanding of their roles to act instinctively during games, eliminating hesitation and confusion that had troubled the line last season.

Challenges Behind the Offensive Line’s Struggles in 2025
Throughout the previous season, the Lions’ offensive linemen often appeared disconnected, with breakdowns in communication leading to unblocked defenders disrupting run plays or pressuring quarterback Jared Goff too quickly. This disconnect hindered the offense’s ability to maintain rhythm and execute plays efficiently, contributing to the overall decline.
Despite various factors affecting the performance, Skipper’s approach reduces the solution to fundamental elements: attitude, skill, and clear comprehension of duties. His recent experience as a player gives him a unique perspective on where gaps in coaching and execution might lie, especially between weekly preparation and game-day performance.
Looking Ahead: Skipper’s Role in Strengthening the Lions’ Offensive Line
Coming into his new position on Dan Campbell’s staff, Skipper appears ready to bridge the divide between coaching strategies and on-field execution. Having closely interacted with teammates during his playing days, he may identify subtle issues that previously went unnoticed. His contribution could be pivotal in restoring the offensive line to its prior effectiveness, a crucial step for the Lions as they strategize for upcoming seasons.
