Todd Bowles Prays Mike Evans Returns to Buccaneers in 2026

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are entering a pivotal offseason following their loss of the NFC South title in 2025, creating urgency around roster decisions. Among the most significant is the future of veteran wide receiver Mike Evans, who has been a cornerstone of the team since 2015 and is entering unrestricted free agency ahead of the 2026 NFL season.

Todd Bowles Expresses Strong Desire for Evans to Stay

Head coach Todd Bowles openly shared his hope that Evans will continue his career with the Buccaneers. On The Rich Eisen Show, Bowles emphasized Evans’ impact on both the team and the Tampa Bay community.

“I’m hoping and praying he comes back,”

Bowles said.

“He’s been a Buc his whole life, he’s done so much for the city and the team of Tampa Bay that it’s unmistakable. His legend is etched in stone there. He can still play at a high level, but he’s earned the right to look around in free agency because he’s played for so long and we just hope and pray that he comes back.”

Evans’ Contract Status and Injury History

Mike Evans is currently listed with a $13.07 million salary cap hit due to a void year on his prior contract; however, his contract status makes him free to negotiate with any team in 2026. This offseason is unique because instead of risking retirement, Evans now has the option to explore offers from other franchises.

Evans, who announced on February 17th that he plans to return for his 13th NFL season, is expected to test free agency as confirmed by ESPN’s Kimberly A. Martin. This decision follows a challenging 2025 season where Evans suffered a broken collarbone in Week 7, causing him to miss nearly two months and preventing him from reaching 1,000 receiving yards—a first in his career.

Prospects for Evans’ Future with Tampa Bay

At 33 years old before the upcoming regular season, Evans is nearing the later stages of his professional career. Despite his intent to examine all available options, NFL insider James Palmer indicated on February 20th that Tampa Bay remains the most probable destination for Evans’ next contract.

Evans’ lifelong tenure with the Buccaneers and his profound contributions to the franchise make his potential return a significant moment for both the team and its fan base. Retaining Evans would preserve a remarkable legacy and add continuity to Tampa Bay’s offense moving forward.
