The Kansas City Chiefs appear to have gained a significant advantage in their 2026 NFL draft evaluation with edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr., even though he did not participate in on-field drills at the NFL Scouting Combine. Bain, who played for the Miami Hurricanes, opted to focus his time on meetings with teams in Indianapolis, including the Chiefs, who hold the ninth overall pick in April’s draft and are actively assessing pass-rushing prospects.
Bain expressed confidence following his interview with the Chiefs’ decision-makers.
“I felt like I had a real strong interview,”
Bain Jr. remarked about his discussions with Kansas City representatives.
Choosing Meetings Over Drills: The Impact on Bain’s Draft Profile
Bain’s absence from the combine workouts attracted attention, especially given his status as a possible top-10 selection. His strategy prioritized in-depth conversations over physical testing. A recurring topic during draft talks has been Bain’s arm length, which is expected to be about 31 inches — shorter than the 33 inches often preferred for NFL edge rushers. However, Bain noted that teams have not raised concerns about this measurement in their interviews.
He stated,
“None of the teams seem to be too concerned with it. I will just talk the talk and walk the walk … Nobody is really asking me about it.”
He emphasized that this issue is more prominent in media discussions than in actual team meetings.
Bain added,
“People keep bringing that up out of nowhere, but no teams brought it up to me, so I don’t bring it up either. As long as I just talk the talk and walk the walk, play with technique, nobody actually cares about it.”
Reflecting on the surprising emergence of this topic, he said,

“I didn’t hear it until later in the year, but it kind of surprised me because I never heard it all my life. I don’t give it the time of day, honestly.”
Chiefs Seek Defensive Reinforcements Ahead of April Draft
Kansas City faces a clear need to enhance its pass rush, having ranked near the bottom of the league with just 33 sacks in the 2025 season. General manager Brett Veach highlighted the importance of thorough interviews in the team’s assessment process.
Veach shared,
“Our college scouts do a great job of painting the picture and having me, the coaching staff, and everyone in that room prepped. It’s just a pathway to keep digging and get as much information as possible.”
Bain’s on-field accomplishments are notable despite missing the combine drills. The 6-foot-3, 275-pound pass rusher amassed 20.5 sacks and 33.5 tackles for loss over 38 games at Miami. In the 2025 season alone, he recorded 9.5 sacks and played a key role in leading the Hurricanes to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. He added five sacks across three postseason contests and was recognized as the ACC Defensive Player of the Year.
Bain’s Draft Stock and What It Means for Kansas City
Bain remains firmly in the conversation for an early first-round selection based on his production and interviews. His comments indicate confidence that his game film and discussions with teams, including Kansas City, will carry more weight than his decision to skip testing.
As the Chiefs prepare to use their high-value draft pick, Bain’s name stands out among the pass rushers under consideration. With Kansas City’s pressing need to strengthen its defensive front, the evaluations and conversations surrounding Bain will be critical as draft day draws near.
