Bears Face Tough Choice: Is Tyrique Stevenson Their Future?

INDIANAPOLIS — The Chicago Bears are confronting a difficult decision regarding the future of their cornerback spot as the offseason progresses, with Tyrique Stevenson’s potential as a long-term starter still unresolved. With free agency imminent, the Bears must determine if Stevenson can be trusted to anchor their secondary or if they need to explore other options, including the NFL Draft, to solidify the position.

Current Defensive Backfield Situation and Team Priorities

The Bears have stability with Jaylon Johnson secured through 2027 and Kyler Gordon under contract until 2028 after his recent extension. However, the other outside cornerback role remains unclear. Despite numerous pressing roster needs, Chicago is likely to consider selecting a cornerback early in the draft, holding the 25th and 57th overall picks, to address this vulnerability.

Additional roster challenges await the Bears this offseason, as they need to fill key starting roles at left tackle, at least one safety position, and probably linebacker following the anticipated exit of Tremaine Edmunds. Defensive line upgrades are also on the agenda, making the cornerback choice part of a complex puzzle.

Performance and Role of Tyrique Stevenson in 2023 Season

Stevenson, entering his fourth year, has yet to secure full confidence from the Bears’ coaching staff. Although he showed flashes of playmaking ability with an interception and two forced fumbles last year, his inconsistency was evident. Notably, he did not start the final five games of the season, including the playoffs, playing sparingly in those critical moments and sitting out the regular-season finale against Detroit.

This uneven usage signals the Bears’ hesitance to entrust Stevenson as a definitive starter opposite Jaylon Johnson. In contrast, veteran cornerback Nahshon Wright served as a stopgap last season, recording five interceptions but is expected to test free agency for a larger contract.

Potential Draft Candidates and Competition for Starting Spots

The Bears will likely enter the draft with an open contest for the starting outside corner position. Among the top prospects they might consider are Clemson’s Avieon Terrell and Tennessee’s Colton Hood in the late first round. Other possible second-round targets include Indiana’s D’Angelo Ponds, South Carolina’s Brandon Cisse, and San Diego State’s Chris Johnson. Each brings a chance to challenge the existing players for a starting role.

Alongside Stevenson, fourth-year corner Terell Smith and recent fifth-round pick Zah Frazier, who missed his rookie season due to a non-football injury, will also vie for playing time this year.

“I’m not coming to the NFL to be on the bench,”

Colton Hood said Thursday at the NFL Scouting Combine.

“I’m planning to be a starter and take somebody’s job. That’s the harsh world we live in.”

Challenges Ahead for Stevenson and the Bears’ Defensive Outlook

Stevenson was selected 56th overall in the second round of the 2023 draft but has struggled to secure a firm footing. Instead of stepping into a clear starting role, he endured a rookie-year competition with Terell Smith, drafted much later. His tenure has also been marked by moments of high pressure, like the infamous “Fail Mary” play in 2024, which continues to loom unless he reaches Pro Bowl level performance.

With the Bears actively pursuing a return to playoff contention, patience with Stevenson’s development is likely growing thin. As general manager Ryan Poles guides the team’s rebuilding efforts, the evaluation of Stevenson’s contract status and on-field reliability will be critical in shaping the Bears’ defensive future.
