Indiana University football coach Curt Cignetti is recognized for his intense focus and sharp glare, especially when he detects any hint of complacency among his players. While little is typically shared about Cignetti during the season, his former players opened up about their experiences with him at the NFL Draft Combine on Thursday, revealing what it truly means to play under his leadership. These Curt Cignetti NFL stories provide insight into his demanding yet passionate coaching style.
A Lesson on Ball Handling During a Blowout
One vivid memory shared by former IU player Riley Nowakowski highlighted Cignetti’s relentless attention to detail, even during a dominant game. In week four of a 63-10 victory over Illinois, backup quarterback Alberto Mendoza repeatedly made questionable decisions running the ball.
Nowakowski recounted,
Bert pulled liked four runs. We were running inside zone and kept pulling it, kept pulling it, kept pulling it,
adding,
“After the fourth time it was like a terrible read he should have handed the ball off. I think he lost like two yards.”
Mid-game, Cignetti called Mendoza over, surprising the quarterback with his blunt message:
We’re not paying you to run the ball. Hand the ball off.
Although IU was well ahead, Cignetti’s frustration was clear.
Nowakowski also recalled Cignetti’s reaction shortly after, saying,
We’re up like 70 points, but he’s pissed off, yelling at Bert. Then he turns back at me, gave me one of his smiles and was like, ‘You like that?’

Ambitions Beyond a Bowl Game
Another former IU standout, cornerback D’Angelo Ponds, shared a story that captures Cignetti’s no-limits mindset. During Ponds’ campus visit with his father after transferring from JMU, the topic of postseason expectations arose.
Ponds said,
I’ll tell you a story of when I transferred from JMU to Indiana,
before recounting how his father expected a bowl appearance during their meeting with Cignetti. However, the coach’s confidence went far beyond that.
“My Dad was like, ‘Oh yeah, we should definitely go to a bowl game, no doubt.’”
Ponds explained.
And Coach Cig looked at him like, ‘Bowl game? We’re gonna win it all.’ And it came true. … It was a full circle moment right there.
Fierce Criticism Balanced with Genuine Care
Safeties in particular felt Cignetti’s intensity early in the 2025 season, as reflected in Louis Moore’s experience following a game against UCLA. Moore’s penalty drew the coach’s sharp focus during film review, though the reprimand was given without direct eye contact, emphasizing the scrutiny.
Moore described it:
He had got onto me one time after the UCLA game,
adding,
“He was just getting onto me, but he was watching film at the same time. He didn’t make eye contact with me. He was just clicking on his thing, I was over there, and he was just clicking on it and just getting on me.”
When Moore assured he understood the critique, Cignetti surprised him with a moment of warmth:
And then I got up, and he was like, ‘Louis, I love you.’ I’m like, ‘I love you, too, coach.’
How These Stories Define Cignetti’s Coaching Legacy
These anecdotes from Riley Nowakowski, D’Angelo Ponds, and Louis Moore offer a rare glimpse of Curt Cignetti’s fierce dedication to excellence, blending rigid demands with personal care. His insistence on precision, refusal to settle for mediocrity, and ability to inspire his players beyond conventional goals set a high bar for those under his guidance.
As IU football continues its journey, the impact of Cignetti’s intense coaching style will likely fuel both individual player development and team accomplishments. The expectation to surpass limits instead of merely meeting them stands as a hallmark of his leadership, shaping a culture primed for sustained success.
