The Carolina Panthers are open to the possibility of trading veteran quarterback Andy Dalton if he expresses interest in such a move. General manager Dan Morgan acknowledged the potential during a recent interview, highlighting that any trade discussions would involve Dalton’s agreement. With uncertainties surrounding the free-agent quarterback market, Dalton’s name has surfaced in trade conversations this week, prompting the Panthers to explore all options as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Dan Morgan Weighs In on Dalton’s Role and Trade Potential
Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, Dan Morgan emphasized Dalton’s value to the team both on and off the field.
“I think it’s the—there’s a potential that somebody may want him,”
Morgan said.
“Andy’s a really good player, and he’s a great guy, great culture fit for us. I haven’t talked to any teams about a trade, but I think if the possibility did come up that I would talk to Andy, give him that option and let him explore a trade.”
This statement suggests the Panthers are willing to entertain trade offers if Dalton desires a change of scenery.
Dalton’s Recent Performance and Team Context
Andy Dalton, a quarterback with 15 seasons of experience, hasn’t been a full-time starter since his tenure with New Orleans ended in 2022. Over three years with the Panthers, he has completed 64.7 percent of his passes, accumulating 1,643 yards alongside 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Last season, Dalton made one spot start in Week 8 against Buffalo, completing 16-of-24 passes for 175 yards with an interception, though the game ended in a heavy loss for Carolina.
Panthers’ Strategy for Backup Quarterback Spot
At 38 years old, Dalton is viewed more as a veteran presence than a long-term starter. The Panthers appear focused on developing younger talent, particularly behind starting quarterback Bryce Young. Morgan has stated,

“I do think that we want to get a little younger and a little more athletic at that backup quarterback spot. So we’ll see what happens from there.”
This indicates the team is leaning toward younger options, which could reduce Dalton’s role or prompt a trade before training camp.
Trade Speculation Involving Anthony Richardson and Draft Plans
Among the trade possibilities discussed is bringing in quarterback Anthony Richardson, who reportedly is available. However, Morgan clarified the Panthers’ stance on such moves, saying they prefer to build depth through the draft rather than trading away picks. “We’re not trading,” Morgan insisted.
“I’m not giving away draft picks. We’ve got to build through the draft.”
With seven selections in the 2026 draft, the Panthers plan to add young talent internally rather than pursue costly trades.
Looking Ahead: What the Future Holds for Dalton and the Panthers
Trading Andy Dalton could provide the Panthers with flexibility but is unlikely to yield significant draft capital, possibly only a late-round pick or a minor exchange. Meanwhile, Dalton’s openness to a trade remains a key factor in any potential deal. As the team continues its efforts to nurture Bryce Young’s development, decisions regarding the backup quarterback spot will shape the Panthers’ roster dynamics heading into the season.
