Seahawks GM Names Sam Darnold Franchise QB After Title Win

Seattle Seahawks General Manager John Schneider ended speculation about the team’s quarterback future by officially naming Sam Darnold their franchise quarterback. This announcement came shortly after Darnold guided the Seahawks to a Super Bowl LX championship despite a rocky start to the season that sparked doubts over his hefty contract.

During the NFL Scouting Combine on Wednesday, Schneider emphasized the organization’s strong commitment.

“We want him to be our quarterback for a long time, for sure,”

he stated on The Rich Eisen Show. He added,

“He came in and fit in just like seamless.”

Early Struggles Give Way to Historic Success

Darnold’s season got off to a difficult start, including a costly late fumble in the opener against San Francisco that cost Seattle a 17-13 win. A few weeks later, a turnover against Tampa Bay directly contributed to the Buccaneers’ game-winning field goal. These early missteps led many fans to question whether the Seahawks had made a mistake in signing Darnold to his three-year, $100.5 million deal.

However, Darnold gradually found consistency, throwing 17 of his 25 touchdown passes during the first nine games. His standout performance contributed to a 14-3 regular season record, as he amassed 4,048 passing yards. By accomplishing back-to-back 14-win seasons, Darnold matched only the likes of Tom Brady’s 2003-2004 Patriots in NFL history.

His focus during high-pressure moments became key to Seattle’s championship run.

Cap Challenges and the Road Ahead for Seahawks Roster

While Darnold’s role is now firmly established, financial obstacles loom for the Seahawks. Starting February 13, $17.5 million of Darnold’s 2026 salary will be guaranteed, increasing his salary cap impact to $37.9 million for that year. Beyond quarterback commitments, maintaining the Super Bowl-winning core will be difficult as six starters approach free agency.

Among those seeking new contracts is Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III, expected to command a salary around $11 million annually. Defensive standouts Boye Mafe and Riq Woolen also require new deals, adding to the complexity of offseason negotiations.

The Seahawks face additional uncertainty with the ongoing ownership transition after Paul G. Allen’s estate announced the franchise is for sale, further complicating long-term planning.

Despite these challenges, Schneider remains confident in the team’s direction. The Super Bowl victory reinforced faith in Darnold, who evolved from an early-season liability to the driving force behind Seattle’s championship success.

For fans who witnessed the early turnovers and questioned his ability, Darnold’s comeback story demonstrates that patience can lead to rewarding results. His seamless fit into coach Mike Macdonald’s system and timely performances secured his position as the Seahawks’ quarterback for years to come. The championship ring he now wears stands as proof against any lingering doubts.
