Braden Smith, recognized as one of Purdue Boilermakers’ greatest players and a standout guard in Big Ten history, achieved a remarkable milestone on Thursday night by surpassing 1,000 career assists. Despite Purdue’s narrow 76-74 home defeat to No. 13 Michigan State, Smith’s accomplishment stood out during the intense contest.
Coach Matt Painter Praises Smith’s Dedication and Impact
Purdue’s head coach, Matt Painter, offered high praise for Smith following the game, highlighting his commitment and contributions to the team throughout his career. Painter expressed deep respect for Smith’s work ethic and influence on the program.
“He’s a fabulous player. He’s great. Everything that he gets, he deserves,”
Painter said in his postgame press conference on Thursday night about Smith after he reached 1,000 career assists.
“He’s put a lot of time into it. He’s sacrificed a lot. He’s worked on his game. Basketball’s an important piece in his life.
“I’m honored to coach him, and he’s been great for us. He’s been fabulous. He’s done a lot for Purdue University.”
Smith’s Career Achievements and Place in College Basketball History
Smith, a four-year starter and two-time All-Big Ten selection, leads Purdue with 1,004 career assists, a figure unmatched in the program’s history. In addition, he ranks third in steals with 235. His playmaking skills have kept him at the forefront of college basketball, joining an elite group of only five Division I men’s players to reach the 1,000-assist milestone. The other members include Bobby Hurley of Duke, Chris Corchiani from NC State, Ed Cota of North Carolina, and Jason Brickman of Long Island University.
Strong Individual Performance Amid Team Challenges
In the game against Michigan State, Smith recorded 12 points, a team-high 10 assists, five rebounds, and one steal, underscoring his all-around contribution despite the loss. For the season, he averages 14.8 points, 8.8 assists, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game, maintaining efficient shooting splits of 47.3% from the field, 40.5% from three-point range, and 81.2% at the free-throw line. His efforts earned him the 2024-25 Big Ten Player of the Year honors.
