George Pickens Fired Up After Cowboys Franchise Tag News

The Dallas Cowboys started their offseason by applying the franchise tag to George Pickens, an upcoming 25-year-old wide receiver. Unlike many players who often feel frustrated by this move, Pickens expressed strong enthusiasm about staying with the Cowboys and continuing his career in Dallas, highlighting a rare positive response to the franchise tag process.

Team Officials on Pickens’ Excitement About Staying

Stephen Jones, the Cowboys’ Executive Vice President of Player Personnel, shared insights during the ‘Rich Eisen Show’ about Pickens’ reaction.

“He was fired up that he wasn’t going to be going anywhere,”

Jones said.

“He was very fired up about his future with us. We felt like he wanted to be in Dallas. He certainly said that to Jerry. Jerry just said he was on cloud nine that he was gonna be a Cowboy again.”

Understanding the Franchise Tag and Its Implications for Pickens

The Cowboys used a non-exclusive franchise tag on Pickens, which permits him to negotiate with other NFL teams during free agency. Should another franchise present an offer, Dallas has the option to match it or let Pickens move, with the stipulation that the signing team would owe Dallas compensation equating to two first-round draft picks.

This tag provides the Cowboys until July 15 to reach a long-term contract agreement with Pickens. Absent a deal by then, Pickens would receive a $27.3 million salary for the 2026-27 season under the franchise tag terms.

George Pickens’ Breakout Season and Its Impact on Dallas

Pickens enjoyed a standout year with Dallas last season, recording career bests in receptions (93), receiving yards (1,429), and touchdowns (9). He demonstrated durability by participating in all 17 games, marking the third time in his career he played the full schedule. His impressive performance positions him as a key asset for the Cowboys’ offensive plans moving forward.

What the Franchise Tag Means for Dallas and Pickens’ Future

While the franchise tag often creates uncertainty, Pickens’ enthusiasm suggests a mutual commitment to continuing the partnership. Dallas retains control over his immediate future and has time to negotiate a potentially long-term agreement. The tag acts as a bridge, ensuring Pickens remains a central figure while setting the stage for contract discussions that could shape the team’s roster and offensive strategy in the seasons ahead.
