David Montgomery Denies Detroit Lions Trade Rumors

David Montgomery, the Detroit Lions running back, has refuted recent reports suggesting he wants to leave the team, addressing circulating trade rumors on social media. The 28-year-old player directly challenged claims made earlier this month, clarifying that any trade talks were not initiated by him.

Clarifying Trade Rumors Surrounding Montgomery

Following a report by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler that Montgomery desired a trade, the veteran running back publicly questioned the validity of those claims on X. “Damn, [D-Mo] told you that?” Montgomery wrote, signaling surprise at the unfounded report after months of silence from him on the platform.

Montgomery appeared to be responding to speculation that arose after seeing his role change in Detroit’s backfield. In 2025, he recorded 716 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 158 carries, working alongside Jahmyr Gibbs in what fans have dubbed the “Sonic and Knuckles” duo—Gibbs known for his speed (Sonic) and Montgomery for his power running style (Knuckles).

Shift in Role Amid Gibbs’ Rise Fuels Speculation

Montgomery’s production has decreased since he led the Lions with over 1,000 yards in 2023. With Gibbs receiving most carries recently due to his quickness and breakout performances, Montgomery has primarily handled short-yardage situations. This evolution in responsibilities sparked rumors that Montgomery might be dissatisfied with his current role and considering a departure.

Jeremy Fowler’s report also hinted that Detroit was open to trading Montgomery and might seek a draft pick in return, possibly a fifth-round selection. Seattle was identified as a possible destination should they fail to re-sign Kenneth Walker III, a fellow running back whose contract situation remains unsettled.

Montgomery’s Response and Detroit’s Future Prospects

Though Montgomery’s statement does not guarantee his long-term stay with the Lions, it firmly puts to rest the notion that he is actively requesting a trade. Detroit concluded the 2025 season without making the playoffs, despite having secured the NFC North title the previous two years.

With Montgomery’s contract paying him $6 million in 2026, his role and value remain significant in Detroit’s rebuilding plans and the team’s search for sustained success. How Montgomery’s relationship with the Lions unfolds could influence backfield dynamics, especially with Gibbs’ continued ascent.

As trade speculation cools down for now, fans and analysts will closely watch how Montgomery and the Lions navigate the upcoming offseason and prepare for the next NFL campaign.
