Fred Warner Tops PFF’s Highest-Graded Linebackers in 2025

The San Francisco 49ers‘ 2025 season faced significant challenges with injuries, particularly when Fred Warner, the team’s standout linebacker, suffered a season-ending injury in Week 6. Despite this setback, the 49ers managed to reach the playoffs, secured a win, and competed for the top seed in the NFC, demonstrating resilience amid adversity. Warner’s performance prior to his injury played a crucial role in the team’s success.

Ranking and Statistics Highlight Warner’s Elite Status

Before his injury, Fred Warner delivered an exceptional start to the season, breaking Patrick Willis’ franchise record with 17 forced fumbles by a linebacker and closing in on total tackles. His early 2025 performance solidified why he holds the distinction of being the highest-paid linebacker in the NFL. Pro Football Focus (PFF) confirmed his elite ranking by naming Warner the top linebacker for the year.

“Even amid an already acclaimed career, Warner continues to build upon his monolithic profile,”

Mason Cameron of PFF wrote.

Warner posted a remarkable 93.2 overall grade from PFF through the first six games, the best start in his career. He was on track to lead the league in run-defense and coverage grades, standing alone as the only linebacker surpassing a 90.0 rating in both categories.

“Although the small sample plays a part, Warner was on pace to lead the NFL in both PFF run-defense grade (91.3) and PFF coverage grade (91.5), standing as the only player to eclipse the 90.0 threshold in each.”

Looking Ahead to Warner’s Future and Continued Success

Warner’s prime years coincide with leadership changes in the 49ers’ linebacker corps, shifting from Robert Saleh to Raheem Morris as defensive coordinator. Although Warner had only limited time under Saleh’s coaching during his rookie and sophomore seasons, the potential for a full peak season with Saleh—and now Morris—remains promising. Warner has expressed strong determination to return stronger in 2026, aiming to extend his impact well into his 30s.

With a likely career largely spent as a Niner, Warner is motivated to maximize these years by aiming for a Super Bowl championship. As he recovers from the most significant injury of his career, expectations remain high for him to break additional franchise records and maintain his status as one of the NFL’s premier linebackers.
