Jahmyr Gibbs has become the undisputed leader of the Detroit backfield after the team traded running back David Montgomery to the Houston Texans on Monday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. This move marks a significant shift in Detroit’s running game ahead of the upcoming seasons.
Gibbs’ Performance Outshines Montgomery Despite Shared Backfield Role
Although Gibbs and Montgomery shared playing time over the past two seasons, Gibbs clearly outperformed the 28-year-old veteran. Since being selected as a first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Gibbs has shown explosive ability, versatility in pass-catching, and efficient production. In 2025, while Montgomery averaged five fewer touches per game, Gibbs amassed 1,839 yards from scrimmage and scored 18 total touchdowns, handling a career-high 320 offensive touches across all 17 regular-season games.
Outlook for Detroit’s Running Back Situation Moving Forward
With Montgomery’s departure, Detroit enters a new phase for its ground game centered on Gibbs. Despite Gibbs’ proven capability, the Lions may still pursue additional backfield depth through free agency or the upcoming draft to complement their lead rusher and maintain a balanced offense.
