Renegades Land Jake Burton, Battlehawks Add Vet Demone Harris

On Monday, the United Football League (UFL) saw the Dallas Renegades sign guard Jake Burton, while the St. Louis Battlehawks added defensive end Demone Harris to their rosters ahead of training camp. These moves bring experienced players into key positions, influencing preparations for the upcoming season.

Jake Burton’s Return to the Dallas Renegades

Jake Burton, a highly regarded offensive guard, has reversed his retirement decision by signing with the Dallas Renegades early in training camp. Burton, who had retired last summer after two seasons with the Michigan Panthers, initially moved on to a coaching role at his alma mater. His return to active play marks a significant shift given his solid track record in spring football.

Throughout his two seasons with Michigan, Burton did not allow a single sack while starting almost every game. His strong performance also attracted NFL interest; in 2024, he spent the preseason with the Detroit Lions. Prior to joining the Panthers, he played for the Philadelphia Stars in the USFL during 2022 and 2023. With this experience, Burton immediately fills a starting guard position for Dallas.

While he may lack the NFL regular-season exposure of some teammates, such as Keaton Sutherland, Burton’s consistent high level of play positions him as one of the most valuable guards on the Renegades roster and a potential All-UFL caliber player.

Adding Defensive Strength: Demone Harris Joins the Battlehawks

Meanwhile, the St. Louis Battlehawks have bolstered their defensive front by signing Demone Harris, a veteran with NFL experience and a Super Bowl championship on his resume. Harris played seven games for the Kansas City Chiefs during their 2019 title run, contributing during both the regular season and playoffs.

Most recently, Harris appeared in nine games for the Atlanta Falcons in 2024, registering 11 tackles and a pass breakup. At 6 feet 4 inches and 277 pounds, he offers a blend of size, speed, and experience as an edge rusher. Although depth on the Battlehawks defensive line may limit his starting opportunities, Harris is expected to be a reliable rotational player throughout the season.

Other Roster Updates Impact Team Dynamics

In addition to these signings, the DC Defenders placed offensive tackle Parker Clements on the retired list. Clements’ departure is unexpected, as he had actively participated in the team’s first week of training camp, leaving a gap in their offensive line depth.

Implications for the Season Ahead

The arrivals of Jake Burton and Demone Harris bring experience and skill to their respective teams, potentially impacting the competition in the UFL’s upcoming season. Burton’s unexpected return suggests the Renegades are serious about reinforcing their offensive line, while Harris’ addition gives the Battlehawks additional edge rushing depth. Meanwhile, roster losses such as Clements’ retirement highlight the challenges teams face in maintaining stability.
