Jets Slap Franchise Tag on Breece Hall Amid Deal Talks

On March 3, the New York Jets applied the franchise tag to running back Breece Hall while continuing to pursue a long-term contract agreement, a league insider confirmed to UPI. The use of the New York Jets franchise tag secures Hall for the 2026 season under a one-year, non-exclusive contract worth $14.293 million, preventing him from entering free agency immediately.

Contract Details and Team’s Approach to Retaining Hall

Breece Hall, selected by the Jets in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, was set to reach free agency this offseason. The franchise tag ensures the team holds Hall’s rights for another year but allows him to negotiate with other NFL teams. Should Hall sign an offer sheet from another franchise, the Jets have the option to match the deal or receive two first-round draft picks as compensation if they decline.

Jets general manager Darren Mougey addressed the situation during the NFL scouting combine, emphasizing the team’s desire to keep Hall long term. Mougey stated,

“Ideally, we’d find a way to get a deal done and keep Breece around. I think I’ve said that for the last year since I got here. Breece is a good player.”

Hall’s Performance and Influence on Contract Talks

At 24 years old, Hall has demonstrated consistent growth, recently amassing 1,065 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 243 carries last season, alongside 36 receptions for 350 yards and one receiving touchdown across 16 games. Over his NFL career, Hall has surpassed 1,350 yards from scrimmage in each of his past three seasons, with a personal best of 1,585 yards and nine total scores across 17 appearances last year.

The franchise tag deadline passed Tuesday at 4 p.m. EST, securing Hall under tender terms that maintain negotiation flexibility. Mougey expressed optimism about Hall’s commitment to the Jets, sharing,

“I do get the sense that Breece wants to be here. We’ve had good conversations throughout the season, after the season. So, it’s just [about] finding a way to do that.”

Upcoming Timelines and Potential Impact on Jets’ Roster

As the NFL free agency period began Monday, the Jets and Hall face a July 15 deadline to finalize a long-term deal. The resolution of these discussions will have major implications for the team’s backfield and salary cap management heading into future campaigns. Retaining Hall could solidify the Jets’ offensive strategy, while his potential departure would require significant adjustments.
