Browns Eye QB Draft Prospects but Stick With Sanders

The Cleveland Browns are considering adding a quarterback to their roster this offseason, but recent reports indicate that the team does not intend to replace their current starter, Shedeur Sanders, through the draft. While exploring potential quarterbacks, the Browns appear focused on maintaining stability at the position rather than pursuing an immediate switch.

Potential Interest in Alabama’s Ty Simpson

Mary Kay Cabot, speaking on 92.3 The Fan, revealed that the Browns could contemplate selecting Ty Simpson from Alabama during the draft. However, this interest does not guarantee that Simpson will be a high priority pick or seen as an instant starter for the team.

Cabot explained that the Browns may consider Simpson at several draft spots including No. 6, No. 24, and No. 39, yet she remains skeptical about any rookie surpassing Sanders in readiness or experience at this time.

“I know the Browns will, at least, consider [Ty Simpson] at No. 6, No. 24, No. 39. At this point, I still think Shedeur has plenty over him in terms of the experience he’s had here. But, I didn’t come away from the Combine thinking any of these guys were going to be coming in to replace Shedeur,”

Cabot said.

Experience Gives Sanders Edge Over Draft Prospects

Sanders’ advantage stems primarily from his season of playing experience with the Browns, which, although limited, currently places him ahead of rookie prospects attempting to break into the NFL. This playing time seems to grant Sanders a stronger position as the expected starter for the team’s upcoming season.

While the Browns are open to drafting a new quarterback, sources suggest they want to use these picks to add developmental prospects who can contribute depth over time rather than those who would immediately take over the starting job from Sanders.

Draft Strategy Reflects Cautious Approach to Quarterback Position

Although Simpson impressed during the NFL Combine and has increased his draft stock, the Browns face a dilemma: using a very high pick such as No. 6 on a player unlikely to start right away risks wasted value. Conversely, waiting until later in the draft to select him could result in losing Simpson to another team.

The Browns are expected to weigh carefully whether to pursue Simpson or other quarterbacks as supplementary talent rather than as immediate replacements. This cautious approach aligns with the current coaching staff’s apparent confidence in Sanders while seeking to strengthen the overall quarterback room.

The Road Ahead for the Browns’ Quarterback Situation

Although sticking with Sanders as the starter provides some continuity, his position is not guaranteed long-term. The team’s plans to add young talent suggest a focus on gradual quarterback development, perhaps signaling future competition for the job.

Ultimately, the Browns’ decisions during the draft and offseason will shape their quarterback dynamics, balancing the need for depth with the hope of building a reliable starter for the franchise’s future.
