Mike Brown Blasts Officials After Knicks’ Close Loss to Thunder

The New York Knicks suffered a narrow 103-100 defeat against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday, unable to contain reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander throughout the game. Despite a strong comeback attempt in the final minutes, the Knicks were edged out at the Paycom Center, snapping their three-game winning streak. This loss comes as New York prepares to embark on a demanding five-game road trip.

Gilgeous-Alexander was a dominant force for the Thunder, recording 26 points and eight assists while maintaining perfect accuracy from the free-throw line, converting all seven attempts. His ability to draw fouls and capitalize at the charity stripe proved pivotal, as the Thunder shot an impressive 84% overall from free throws compared to the Knicks’ 73%.

Mike Brown Criticizes Referees’ Handling of Key Fouls

Knicks head coach Mike Brown did not shy away from addressing officiating after the game. He pinpointed Gilgeous-Alexander’s effectiveness in influencing referees and noted the significant impact of the free-throw disparity on the game’s outcome.

“SGA, he’s a tough cover. He does a great job of convincing the referees — probably better than anybody in the league — that he’s getting hit,”

Brown said.

“Them shooting 84% from the free throw line, compared to our 73%, was a factor.”

Earlier in the game, Brown’s frustration boiled over when a clear offensive foul on Gilgeous-Alexander was overlooked by officials. With Gilgeous-Alexander already carrying two fouls, Knicks star Jalen Brunson attempted to provoke a third, but the referees instead called a blocking foul on Brunson. Brown’s visible displeasure led to his first technical foul of the season after an animated reaction from the sideline.

Coach Brown Urges Knicks to Focus Despite Questionable Calls

After the match, Brown expressed his belief that the referees should have been more consistent, especially regarding Gilgeous-Alexander’s fouls. Despite the contentious officiating, he emphasized the team’s need to maintain composure and resilience.

“One of the things that I wanted to get across to the guys is, we’re good enough to win despite whatever the officials are calling out on the floor. We need to have that mentality,”

Brown said.

Upcoming Challenges as Knicks Aim for Redemption

Looking ahead, the Knicks will have an opportunity to even the series when they visit the Thunder again on March 29 at the Paycom Center. This defeat marks New York’s first loss of the month and interrupts their momentum before they begin a difficult stretch of five consecutive road games. The journey starts with a game against the Denver Nuggets on Friday, followed by back-to-back contests against the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers.

Maintaining focus during this demanding road trip will be critical for the Knicks as they seek to build on their earlier successes and overcome the challenges posed by high-caliber opponents and controversial officiating.
