Danielle Hunter Signs $40M Extension to Stay with Texans

Defensive end Danielle Hunter will remain with the Houston Texans after signing a one-year extension worth $40.1 million, including a $30.7 million signing bonus, according to NFL Network. This contract ensures Hunter remains a key part of the Texans’ defense through the 2027 season.

Hunter, 31, joined Houston in 2024 following eight seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. He initially signed a two-year, $49 million contract as a free agent, followed by a one-year, $35.6 million extension during the 2025 offseason.

Hunter’s Recent Performance Highlights Impact on Texans’ Defense

A five-time Pro Bowl selection, Hunter recently completed a standout season for the Texans, recording 54 tackles, 15 sacks, and 15 tackles for loss. His 22 quarterback hits contributed to Houston leading the league in fewest yards allowed per game (277.2) and ranking second in points given up (17.4).

Hunter started all 17 games last season and added three forced fumbles along with three passes defended, cementing his role as a defensive cornerstone.

Coaching Staff Praise Hunter’s Skills and Leadership

Rod Wright, Houston’s defensive line coach, spoke to KPRC2 about Hunter’s playing style and character. Wright described Hunter as “physical and relentless,” with a methodical and unorthodox approach that makes it difficult for opponents to predict his moves on the field.

“He’s also physical and relentless, but a little bit more methodical, a little bit more unorthodox,”

Wright said. “Hard to guess what he’s going to do from play to play when it comes to rushing. Both are very disciplined when it comes to the run game. And both guys obviously present a challenge to any opposing lineman they’re going against.” – Rod Wright, Texans Defensive Line Coach

Wright further described Hunter’s calm composure and unique personality:

“With D-Hunt, he’s been there, done that. Seen it all, doesn’t overreact to anything. Very calm demeanor, kind of the Yin and Yang type of deal. Both have a presence about them, but it’s very different. Don’t sleep on Danielle’s personality. Really funny guy, likes to have fun as well. Got to behind closed doors, though. If you don’t really know him, he’s kind of a more reserved type of guy.”

Career Overview and Future Outlook with Texans

Over his 10-year NFL career, Hunter has amassed 114.5 sacks and 562 tackles, showcasing consistent elite production. His new contract solidifies the Texans’ investment in his veteran leadership and pass-rushing ability as they build their defensive unit for coming seasons.

Hunter’s presence is expected to be a stabilizing factor for Houston’s defense, continuing to provide reliable play as the team aims to compete in future campaigns. The extension reflects the Texans’ confidence in Hunter’s experience and skill set remaining impactful on and off the field through 2027.
